As you see the soaring towers of Mount Fitz Roy rise up from the steppe, surrounded by jagged, snow-clad spires, just a whirl of cloud hovering above, you’ll appreciate why this is one of the most famous peaks in all of Argentine Patagonia. Rising to 11,500ft, it is one of the most magnificent mountains in the world, with polished granite towers, too steep for even snow to settle - it’s no surprise that it has resisted human ascent for so long. As one of the milestones of Andean mountain climbing history, Fitz Roy was summitted for the first time in 1952 and climbers from across the globe continue to attempt to conquer its unforgiving slopes.
If you would prefer to to stay a little closer to the earth than the clouds, aim for the first base camp at Laguna Torre, it’s a delightful hike, which gives outstanding views of the Fitz Roy chain and Cerro Torre. Mount Fitz Roy holidays also give you the opportunity to discover Patagonian coihue forests and spot condors, grey foxes, huemul, guanaco and - if you’re lucky - puma.
