The dreams of those sleeping in El Chaltén tonight are filled with big ambitions. This little windswept town, in the very south of Argentine Patagonia, lies at the feet of magnificent Mount Fitz Roy and it’s the starting point for all expeditions into Los Glaciares national park. In its cheerful bars and relaxed restaurants you’ll overhear climbers planning their route up the mountain, or hikers talking about the day’s challenging trek, or about their forays into the vast Southern Patagonian Ice field. The town was named for the Tehuelche people’s name for Mount Fitz Roy which, when translated means smoking mountain.
When staying here, wake to watch the sunrise – the golden rays light up the mountain’s monolithic granite towers, which glow bright red for a few seconds, lighting the perpetual plume of cloud above the mountain’s peaks, creating a giant fire in the sky. Much like it’s nearby smoking mountain, El Chaltén holidays all things adventures and wild beauty. Return home with memories to last a lifetime and some serious bragging rights.
