Ready to switch off? On this perfectly crafted family sabbatical, experience Mexico in all its glory, balancing learning, adventure and proper quality time (yes – the kind where no one’s rushing anywhere).

Over the course of a month, you’ll move between Mexico’s great cities, wild coastlines and ancient civilisations. One day you’re standing in the shadow of vast Mayan pyramids, the next you’re snorkelling with sea lions, playing I-Spy for flamingoes and tropical fish or cycling past Oaxaca’s ever-changing street art. You’ll also have the chance to discover Mexico’s vibrant culture throughout: cooking with Zapotec women, sharing breakfast with a Mayan family, wandering local markets and discovering why tacos really do taste better standing up.

Importantly, this journey knows when to slow down and allow you to enjoy some work-free quality time. Beach days in Baja and Isla Holbox, lazy afternoons by hotel pools, and easy strolls mean everyone has space to recharge, whether you’re travelling with little ones or teens. By the end, you won’t have just covered a lot of ground; you’ll have gathered stories, shared experiences and gained a deeper understanding of this beautiful country (alongside a golden tan, of course).

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Today, it’s time to set off on your Mexican family adventure. Head to the airport, whizz through security and grab some snacks in the lounge before boarding your 12-hour flight to Mexico City. Settle into your seats and switch into holiday mode – perhaps with a film for the little ones or a glass of wine for you – knowing that vibrant cities, ancient ruins and jungle adventures lie ahead.

Once you touch down, you’ll be greeted by your private driver and transferred to your city centre hotel. Head straight out to a family-friendly restaurant for dinner – our clued-up Concierge is on hand to offer some tasty recommendations – before an early night, ready for tomorrow’s adventure.

Put on your history hats this morning as you head out for an unforgettable introduction to ancient Mexico with a friendly guide. Around 30 miles outside the capital lies Teotihuacan, once (in around 500 AD) one of the largest cities in the world and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ready to travel back in time? Wander along the Avenue of the Dead, climb the mighty Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and explore temples and frescoed palaces as your guide brings this extraordinary civilisation to life. As the little ones are regaled with exciting stories of sun worship and feathered serpent gods, the adults can gain a deeper insight into how this vast ceremonial city once functioned.

After a tasty lunch at a local restaurant, return to Mexico City in the afternoon. The rest of the day is yours for the taking – perhaps explore the Zocalo (Central Square), the second-largest plaza in the world, or the adjacent National Palace, where Diego Rivera's famous murals depict more than 1,000 years of Mexican history.

After a fill-your-boots breakfast, it’s time to discover Mexico City’s layered history and buzzing modern energy. Your expert guide will meet you at your hotel for a private transfer to the historic centre, where Aztec ruins sit beneath colonial cathedrals and grand avenues lead to art deco landmarks.

Once you arrive, dive into local life at two of the city’s most iconic markets. Jamaica Market bursts with colour, flowers and food stalls – perfect for curious young explorers – while Sonora Market offers a more unusual glimpse into Mexico’s spiritual traditions.

In the afternoon, head to the outstanding National Museum of Anthropology, home to ancient art, monumental stone carvings and other treasures from Mexico’s indigenous cultures. It’s an eye-opening experience for all ages and offers a deeper insight into Mexico’s indigenous heritage.

Rise and shine: an early start this morning rewards you with one of Mexico’s most magical spectacles. After grabbing your camera and meeting your expert guide, travel through forested highlands to the Piedra Herrada Sanctuary, where, between late autumn and early spring, millions of monarch butterflies gather in the oyamel pine trees.

A gentle guided walk through the reserve brings you up close and personal with these delicate creatures – an extraordinary moment for both children and adults.

From here, continue to the small mountain village of Meson Viejo for a traditional lunch in an alpine-style refuge. Once you’ve refuelled, head on to Matlazinca, an indigenous community where you’ll learn about Mexican rural life and customs.

Return to Mexico City in the afternoon, armed with beautiful memories and a camera roll of dazzling shots.

Today, dive straight into one of Mexico’s most colourful traditions: lucha libre. More than wrestling, this high-energy spectacle blends acrobatics, theatre and folklore – perfect for capturing young imaginations.

You’ll meet Heddi, a former French wrestler who reinvented himself as a luchador after settling in Mexico. Joined by Lucas, a journalist who knows the scene inside out, visit one of Heddi’s favourite training halls, where masks hang from the walls and the rhythm of the sport comes alive. From here, head to the Mexico City arena to experience a live match, cheering alongside local families as masked heroes leap through the air and the crowd erupts with excitement.

The following day is yours to explore. Wander through leafy Chapultepec Park, home to a castle, lakes and plenty of space to burn off energy, or hop between neighbourhoods sampling street tacos and churros. For something lighter, explore Coyoacán’s colourful streets and grab an ice cream in the plaza.

Today, wave goodbye to Mexico City as you take a short two-and-a-half-hour flight to La Paz, the relaxed capital of Baja California Sur.

Set on a sweeping bay along the Sea of Cortez, La Paz feels worlds away from the buzz of the capital: think strolls along the waterfront, exploring the historic Plaza Constitucion or simply drifting between cafés and family-run restaurants. Despite a distinctly international feel, La Paz remains deeply Mexican at heart – and it makes a wonderful base for exploring nearby islands, marine reserves and desert landscapes.

You’ll be spending the next three nights here, so the rest of the afternoon is yours to settle in, dip tiny toes into the sea or enjoy your first Baja sunset.

Make sure the youngsters fuel up at breakfast, because today brings a full-day adventure to Espiritu Santo, a protected island rich in wildlife and natural beauty.

Travelling by boat, you’ll cruise along crystal-clear waters to snorkel among colourful fish, spot blue-footed booby birds overhead and, with a bit of luck, see dolphins or manta rays. The island is known for its playful colony of sea lions, and you might even get to swim alongside them, making this a truly special experience.

Arrive back at your hotel early evening, just in time to watch the sunset.

It’s another early start this morning, but definitely worth it. Accompanied by a marine biologist, kayak through the calm waters of Bahia Balandra, a beautiful bay framed by rust-coloured hills and white-sand beaches. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the local ecosystem, snorkel in sheltered coves and keep watch for sea lions and seabirds.

No doubt you’ll have worked up an appetite. After a relaxed beach picnic, continue exploring Balanadra – often ranked among Mexico’s most stunning beaches – stopping to swim, wander mangroves or simply soak up the dazzling scenery.

This morning offers the chance to snorkel with whale sharks, the gentle giants of the Sea of Cortez. While sightings can never be guaranteed, swimming alongside these enormous yet harmless creatures is a truly unforgettable experience.

Following your two-hour guided snorkelling trip, collect your hire car and set off on a scenic drive toward Cabo Pulmo, which takes around two-and-a-half hours. Along the way, cross desert landscapes and pass small communities along the Gulf of California, playing i-Spy for prickly cacti and sandy dunes.

You’ll spend the next two nights in a beachfront bungalow in Cabo Pulmo, a former pearl-fishing village now celebrated for its extraordinary marine reserve and thriving coral reef.

Today is all about slipping beneath the surface and discovering a completely different side of Mexico. Cabo Pulmo is home to one of the oldest coral reefs in the region, and you’ll have the chance to see it up close this morning.

Joining a small-group snorkelling excursion, you’ll explore vibrant reefs teeming with tropical fish, turtles, rays and, occasionally, sharks. It's a brilliant educational experience for children, offering a close-up look at conservation in action amid one of Mexico’s most important protected ecosystems.

Back on dry land, the afternoon is yours. Stretch out on the beach, build sandcastles, watch the fishing boats drift past or simply enjoy the laid-back pace.

After breakfast this morning, drive two-and-a-half hours to Todos Santos, where you’ll be spending the next two nights.

An oasis town set against Baja's arid backdrop, Todos Santos is known for its creative spirit, leafy streets and fresh Pacific breezes. After settling into your hotel, spend time browsing art galleries, wandering along the beachfront or simply unwinding by the pool.

Today’s all about embracing Baja’s ocean energy as you head out for a private surf lesson on one of Todos Santos’ beautiful beaches.

Framed by mango orchards, palm trees and sweeping ocean views, this laid-back surf town is ideal for beginners. With an English-speaking instructor and all equipment provided, you’ll spend two hours learning the basics – from paddling techniques to catching your first wave.

The rest of the day is free to enjoy Todos Santos at your own pace – perhaps one last wander through the town, a relaxed lunch overlooking the sea or a sunset stroll along the beach.

After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive to San Jose del Cabo, which takes just under two hours. Following Route 19 along the coast, you’ll glide past dramatic cliffs, sprawling ocean views and the famous rock arches of Cabo San Lucas.

After returning your hire car, fly from Los Cabos Airport to Oaxaca via Mexico City, which arrives in the early evening. A private transfer takes you to your hotel in the historic centre, where you’ll settle in for a five-night stay.

Often described as Mexico’s creative soul, Oaxaca blends colonial elegance with indigenous heritage. Alongside its thriving food scene, colourful crafts and vibrant cafe culture, Oaxaca also offers easy access to mountains, archaeological sites and artisan villages.

Today, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Oaxaca’s creative side on a guided street art bike tour. Suitable for children and parents alike, this small-group experience offers a relaxed and engaging way for families to connect with the city.

Cycling through neighbourhoods such as Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, discover striking murals that weave together ancestral symbolism and contemporary expression. Your guide brings the artwork to life by sharing the stories behind the pieces and explaining how street art reflects Mexico’s social history, identity and imagination.

Later, the day is yours, whether you’d rather wander through the leafy Zocalo, marvel at the magnificent Santo Domingo Church or explore the bustling markets.

The next two days are yours to explore Oaxaca. On the first day, we’ve arranged for you to discover the city’s extraordinary heritage at Monte Alban, the ancient Zapotec capital perched high above the Oaxaca Valley. Walking among ceremonial plazas and stone carvings, you’ll learn how this powerful civilisation shaped early writing, astronomy and calendar systems.

From here, your journey continues into the surrounding artisan villages. In Arrazola, watch craftsmen create vibrant alebrijes – fantastical wooden animals carved from copal wood. In San Bartolo Coyotepec, you’ll visit Dona Rosa’s workshop to discover the secrets of Oaxaca’s famous black pottery. Finally, stop at the impressive 16th-century Dominican convent at Cuilapam de Guerrero, before heading back to your hotel for a good night’s sleep and another day of exploring.

We hope you’ve woken up with an appetite, because today invites you into the heart of Oaxacan cuisine.

Depending on the availability of chefs, you’ll travel to either Teotitlan del Valle or Santa Ana del Valle to meet local comideras – women who preserve generations-old culinary traditions. After visiting the market to gather ingredients, you’ll join them in preparing regional dishes such as chepil soup, mole verde with pumpkin seeds or chocolate tamales.

Cooking here takes place over wood fires, just as it has for centuries. Once you’ve finished crafting your delights, it’s time to sit down together and enjoy the meal with coffee or hot chocolate (yum).

This morning, say goodbye to Oaxaca as you’re privately transferred to the airport, a 25-minute drive. From here, catch your hour-and-a-half flight from Oaxaca to Merida, the capital of Yucatan.

On arrival, collect your hire car and drive to your hotel, your home for the next six nights.

Once settled, it’s time to explore Merida. An ideal base for exploring Mayan ruins, nature reserves and colonial towns, the city itself charms with its grand Paseo de Montejo, lively markets and cultural museums.

This morning, step back in time into the world of the ancient Maya peoples with a private guided visit to Uxmal, one of the Yucatan’s most beautifully preserved archaeological sites.

Set deep in the jungle, Uxmal is renowned for its elegant Puuc-style architecture, where intricate stonework and harmonious proportions take centre stage. With your expert guide, explore highlights such as the Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery Quadrangle, the Ball Court and the grand Governor’s Palace, whose detailed carvings are among the finest in the region.

Children still raring to go? In the afternoon, we’d recommend visiting Cenote Kankirixche. This almost fully enclosed cenote features dramatic stalactites hanging from the ceiling and clear, cool water, perfect for splashing, swimming or simply floating at your own pace.

Travelling with any animal enthusiasts? You’re in luck: today is all about nature and wildlife as you head out on a private tour of the Celestun Biosphere Reserve.

Accompanied by a local wildlife specialist, you’ll explore the reserve by boat, gliding through mangrove channels while learning about the delicate ecosystem and ongoing conservation efforts. The little ones can keep an eye out for herons, pelicans and other birdlife as your guide explains the importance of mangroves and reforestation in the face of climate change.

You’ll then switch boats and head out into open water for flamingo watching, where these striking pink birds often gather in shallow lagoons. The tour also includes a visit to an Ojo de Agua, where freshwater mixes with seawater to create a natural pool reminiscent of a flooded cenote.

This morning, enjoy a private walking tour of Merida, uncovering the layers of history that make this one of Mexico’s most elegant colonial cities.

Stroll through lush plazas and past pastel-coloured mansions and bustling markets while your guide shares stories of Merida’s Maya roots, colonial past and modern cultural life. You’ll also have the chance to visit the main square, cathedral and the grand Paseo de Montejo, a grand avenue modelled after Paris’s Champs-Elysees.

The next two days are yours for the taking, whether you’d rather play hide-and-seek in Parque de Plancha or head back to the markets for a taste of the local cuisine.

On one of the days, we’d recommend heading to Izamal, one of Yucatan’s most enchanting towns. Known as La Ciudad Amarilla (the yellow city), Izamal is washed in golden hues, from its cobbled streets to its historic buildings. Wander slowly through the town, where horse-drawn carriages wait by the roadside and life moves at a gentler pace. At the heart of the city stands the convent of Saint Anthony of Padua, its vast atrium framed by 75 arches – one of the largest in the world.

Izamal is also home to several Mayan pyramids, which rise unexpectedly among the colonial streets. Climb to the top for sweeping views, then reward yourselves with a marquesita – a crisp rolled crepe filled with Nutella and melted cheese.

Today, you’ll travel from Merida to Valladolid, driving through lush jungle landscapes typical of the Yucatan Peninsula.

En route, stop at Chichen Itza for a private guided tour of this legendary Maya site. Dominated by the iconic Pyramid of Kukulkan, the city reveals the sophistication of Maya astronomy, engineering and ritual life. Alongside your friendly guide, explore ceremonial platforms, temples and the Great Ball Court, learning about the significance of the city’s cenotes and how Toltec influences shaped the site over time.

After the visit, continue on to Valladolid, where you can settle into a hotel for a relaxing afternoon and a delicious Mexican dinner.

This morning offers one of the most meaningful experiences of your family sabbatical. Rise bright and early and head out to visit a local Mayan family to share a traditional breakfast and learn about daily life, customs and traditions. This warm, personal encounter allows for genuine connection and conversation, offering children a chance to see a different way of life up close.

Afterwards, head to the Chenxunan cenote, a tranquil natural pool hidden within the jungle. Surrounded by greenery and cared for as a micro ecological reserve, this peaceful cenote offers crystal-clear water and a wonderfully uncrowded swimming experience. With access carefully limited, it feels like discovering a secret oasis – the perfect place to reflect, relax and enjoy each other’s company before the next chapter of your journey.

Today calls for a change of pace as you leave Yucatan’s inland landscape behind and journey north to the laid-back shores of Isla Holbox. After a scenic two-hour drive to the port of Chiquila, a 30-minute boat crossing carries you across jade-coloured waters to this narrow island, which is set within the protected Yum Balam Nature Reserve.

Once you arrive, settle into your beachside hotel. Here, life slows down and days are spent exactly as you choose: lounging on the sand, soaking up the sun at the pool or enjoying barefoot lunches at the outdoor restaurant.

Holbox is rich in beauty – think white-sand beaches, shallow turquoise lagoons, and abundant birdlife, including flamingos and pelicans. There are no cars here, just sandy lanes, bicycles and the gentle rhythm of the sea, making it a fantastic place for families. Over these three days, explore at your own pace: we’d recommend stopping at the Yalahan Lagoon for some snorkelling or visiting Isla Pajaros, where mangroves shelter countless bird species.

Today, head out by boat on a private trip to Cabo Catoche, the northernmost point of the Yucatan Peninsula. Just offshore from Isla Holbox, this untouched stretch of coastline feels wonderfully remote.

With an English-speaking skipper, cruise across open water before dropping anchor for swimming, snorkeling and fishing (conditions permitting). The waters here are exceptionally clear, and the marine life is often vibrant and plentiful, making for a fantastic game of I-Spy. Around lunchtime, enjoy a relaxed meal on board before spending time swimming or strolling along the shore.

Later, depending on conditions, you’ll continue towards Isla Pajaros or Isla Pasion, both known for their birdlife and, between May and November, the chance to spot flamingos in their natural habitat. Is there any better way to round off your incredible family sabbatical?

This morning, say goodbye to island life as you board the 30-minute boat back to Chiquila. From here, continue onward towards Cancun, a two-hour drive away, in preparation for your journey home.

This evening, depart from Cancun International Airport on your overnight flight back to the UK. The flight takes around ten hours, and you’ll arrive home the following morning, carrying a little of Mexico’s colour and warmth with you.
