A spa retreat tucked away in the secluded southeast point of Koh Samui, Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa is a haven for those in need of some well-earned r & r, and it has the eco-chic vibe down to a tee.

The hotel is comprised of 24 hillside rooms, 10 suites and 26 villas, spread out in amongst the tropical jungle, seamlessly blending in with the surroundings, a theme recurrent throughout the hotel. Some of the walls are comprised of sliding glass doors, giving the impression that guests are actually sleeping outside, with the front opening onto a terrace offering spectacular views out to sea. Minimally chic, the décor is understated whilst luxurious at the same time - earthy tones, stone floors and outdoor bathrooms enhance the stunning surroundings.
The Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa is at the heart of it all. Above the cave temple, it has fantastic views over the bay, further enhancing outdoor yoga sessions. The main rule of the sanctuary is to do as much or as little as you want, however with over 70 therapies to choose from, it is hard to do nothing. Yoga, tai chi, meditation, massages and fitness classes are all available, to name but a few, and there is also a gym, steam cavern and outdoor pool.
Many go to Kamalaya for the health benefits alone and everyone is given a wellness consultation and body analysis on arrival, so as to suggest the best programme for them, which include Relax and Renew, Ideal Weight, Detoxification and Sleep Enhancement.
Healthy does not mean boring at Kamalaya, and the food doesn't only taste good, but makes you feel good too. Thai broths, maki rolls and plenty of fresh fruit feature highly on the menu, however non-detox guests needn't fear as not-so-healthy options such as chocolate soufflés and goats cheese risotto are also on offer.
