Luxury Hotels in Java

As the most populous island in the world and home to Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, it’s no surprise that Java boasts a wealth of accommodation options for all kinds of travellers. To help narrow down your options, we’ve selected a couple that we think are the best hotels in Java…

Jiwa Jawa Resort

Perched high in the mountains of Pobolinggo, East Java, lies one of the best hotels in Java; The Jiwa Jawa Resort. Practically on Mount Bromo's doorstep it’s easy to see why so many flock here.

There are nine bedrooms at Jiwa Jawa (formerly known as the Java Banana Lodge) laid out in cabin style lodges, and one larger lodge sleeping up to nine people, perfect for families. There is also a café at the hotel, as well as an art gallery where regular photography exhibitions are held.

The hotel's position and proximity to Mount Bromo help confirm its spot among some of the best hotels in Java, with spectacular viewsand at 2000 metres above sea level, that's no exaggeration. Benched are scattered around the property, so guests can bask in their surroundings.

Why We Love It

We think the best time to visit Mount Bromo is at sunrise, the views are certainly worth lugging yourself out of bed for.

The Phoenix Hotel

Housed in a colonial building dating back to the early 1900's, The Phoenix is full of character and is a fantastic base from which to explore Yogyakarta and the surrounding area.

There are 144 rooms at The Phoenix, all with views of either the city, garden or swimming pool. All have Wi-Fi and combine modern touches with its Indonesian heritage. Facilities include a swimming pool and fitness centre, and massage treatments are also available.

The restaurant is down by the swimming pool and offers both Western and Indonesian cuisine, and there are numerous local restaurants within walking distance.

The location of The Phoenix is unbeatable and its main draw card for those wanting to experience one of the best hotels in Java and explore the area surrounding Yogyakarta. Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist sanctuary, is spectacular, especially seen at dawn when the sun rises over the majestic ten-tiered temple. For a religious contrast, head to Prambanan, a Hindu temple. Although not in as good condition, it is still fascinating and the gardens surrounding the temple are pristine. The third highlight is simply the countryside in this part of Java - lush green fields, high mountains and numerous volcanoes. Local villages welcome visitors and it is a great way to learn about the local farming communities.

Why We Love It

The hotels position in the centre of Yogyakarta means guests can explore the nearby local restaurants.

Why visit Indonesia with Original Travel ?

While Indonesia is (quite rightly) a tourist magnet, you can explore a side of the islands that often goes unseen with our team’s insider knowledge and connections. That might come in the form of an eco-snorkelling tour in Lombok, guided by fishermen who previously worked in the shark-fishing industry. Our savvy in-country Concierges are just a WhatsApp away, eager to recommend their favourite tried-and-tested experiences. We’ll even take the admin out of travel by arranging e-visas and the Bali Tourist Tax before you go, so you can enjoy Indonesia’s rice terraces, temples and beaches in peace.
