What goes around comes around, and a few thousand years after every self-respecting caveman was shacked up in a rocky hole, today’s trendy troglodytes are doing just the same at Iconic Santorini.
Situated in Imerovigli, one of Santorini's beautiful white walled villages clinging to the cliffs overlooking the vast caldera, Iconic Santorini has ten rooms and 12 suites built directly into the rock face. The intervening millennia have seen some improvements in cave dwelling, with the likes of flatscreen TVs and Wifi now coming as standard, but in the heat of summer the cool rock means one mod con - air con - is not required. Each room also has a private terrace for appreciating what must be one of the world's great views and some of the suites have their own heated plunge pools. In fact the top of the range Iconic Suite has both indoor grotto pool and a plunge pool with the best view in the house.
The best seats in the Pergola Restaurant also have a great view while the culinarily curious might want to sit near the open kitchen to watch the excellent chef and his team in action. The emphasis here is on classic Greek cuisine accompanied by a fine selection of Santorini's really quite impressive wines.
The hotel also has a small spa and gym but if you can drag yourself away from the confines and comforts of the property the island is well worth exploration, with boat trips to the caldera, wine tastings, walks and sunset tours all potential options.
As with all our recommended properties on Santorini this is a superb place for honeymoons and couples getaways and the staff can arrange a private dinner in a number of romantic spots around the hotel.
