In the heart of the Historic Route, between Mekele and Axum, the recently opened Gheralta Lodge is a lovely property off the well-trodden tourist route.
Run by an Italian couple and overlooking the stunning Gheralta Mountains near the town of Hawzen, the low-lying bungalows offer comfortable and clean accommodation for a maximum of 30 guests at any one time.
The rooms have been tastefully decorated in the local Tigray style and there is a lovely restaurant serving simple and delicious Italian food, much of which uses ingredients freshly grown in the Lodge's vegetable garden.
This secluded property offers access to some of the lesser-known cultural and historical sites of northern Ethiopia, especially the rock churches carved high in the Gheralta Mountains that are far less visited than their more famous counterparts in Lalibela. The stunning landscape is also perfect for walking and gentle trekking, as well as bird watching.
Mebratu, the farmer who previously lived off the land here, is now the chief guard at the lodge and his house has been preserved so guests can see some traditional Tigrian architecture.
