Time Difference

The United Kingdom (GMT) is 10 hours ahead of Papeete, French Polynesia, although there are three different time zones throughout the country (as it is spread across such a large area). Tahiti Time is GMT-10, Marquesas Time is GMT-9.5 and Gambier Time is GMT-9. Daylight Saving Time has never been used here and the clocks do not change seasonally.

Money

The unit of currency in French Polynesia is the cours de franc Pacifique (CFP; Pacific franc), referred to simply as ‘the franc’. If you intend to use a credit card during your stay, you should note that only Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners and JCP (Japan) are widely accepted here. Holders of other cards may encounter difficulties obtaining cash and paying for goods, while those with the cards mentioned above will be able to use ATMs found throughout the country.

Electricity

The standard voltage is 110 / 220 V and the standard frequency is 60 / 50 Hz and the power plugs and sockets are of type A, B and E. UK travellers will need to bring an adapter.

Shops and Amenities

Generally, stores are typically open Monday to Friday from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 5.30pm, varying by 30 minutes or so. Most of the shops in Papeete are also open on Saturday mornings but will likely be closed on Sundays.

Media

The most notable news sources for French Polynesia are Tahiti Infos and la Depeche, with several televsion channels covering news, sports and more including Tahiti Nui TV (French: Tahiti Nui Télévision), abbreviated as TNTV, a popular French Polynesian television channel.

Post

The main post office is located downtown of Papeete, close to the sea front. It’s open during the week from 7am to 6pm and on Saturday from 8am to 11am but you will also find more post offices all around the island, as well as on other smaller islands.

The main Internet service providers in French Polynesia are Vini, Viti and Tahiti Wifi. As for mobile operators there are two: Vini by OPT (Office des Postes et Telecommunications) and Vodafone Polynesia, which offer good coverage throughout the country.
