Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Sri Lanka – Negombo – Wilpattu National Park – Dambulla – Madulkelle – Gal Oya National Park – Ahangama
100% customisable for you
Depart from the UK today to begin your Sri Lankan adventure. You'll fly overnight, either directly from London to Colombo (ten-and-a-half hours), or connecting via the Middle East (roughly 13 hours in total), landing the following morning.
On arrival in Sri Lanka, your private guide will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to your first hotel, which will be your home for the next two nights. Spend the rest of today relaxing, or perhaps head out to explore by bicycle, before your first taste of delicious Sri Lankan cuisine for dinner.
During your time in this laid-back beach town, visit a workshop where local women craft beautiful textiles, intricate woodwork and paintings. This initiative provides meaningful employment while preserving traditional skills. You can have a go too, creating a tote bag or cushion cover to take home as a special souvenir.
To enjoy some local flavours, join a hands-on cooking class to prepare three Sri Lankan specialities. Begin with a trip to a local market with your guide to source ingredients, then learn the secrets behind the fragrant spices and delicious curries, before sitting down to lunch to sample your culinary creations.
Today you’re heading to Wilpattu National Park, which is around a three-and-a-half-hour drive away and will be your base for the next two nights. Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park, Wilpattu is renowned for its leopards and is also home to spotted deer, elephants, wild boars, sloth bears and crocodiles, so what better way to get to know the locals than by heading out on a safari? There are both morning and dusk safaris to enjoy during your stay (when the wildlife is at its most active), in between which you can head out on a guided nature or photography walk, or join another cooking class to further your foodie credentials.
This morning, your driver will pick you up for the two-hour journey towards Dambulla, in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights. This is a part of the country famous for its temples, so once you arrive, head straight out to tick the first temple off your list: Heenukkiriyawa, a historic site known for its wood carvings and cave shrine, which you’ll explore with a private guide.
After your visit, enjoy a conversation with the resident Buddhist monks, who offer a fascinating insight into their traditions and daily life. Then end your day with another delicious dinner of authentic Sri Lankan dishes.
Fuel up with a hearty breakfast this morning, as there’s plenty more to explore around Dambulla. First, lace up your walking shoes for a hike to Pidurangala Rock. Over 2,500 years ago, monks lived in the surrounding caves and, in the fifth century, King Kasyapa established a monastery here. Near the entrance, there’s also a 1930s temple leading to an ancient, artefact-filled cave. The hike to the summit will definitely get your heart pumping, but your efforts are richly rewarded with sweeping views of Sigiriya and the surrounding landscape.
Next, visit one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, the Dambulla Golden Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been a major pilgrimage destination for more than 2,000 years and features five shrines adorned with intricate Buddhist murals. Legend has it the richly embellished temples were decorated by a king who once sought refuge in these caves. Admire the artistry of each shrine and savour the spirituality of this special place, before returning to your hotel for another leisurely evening.
Before departing Dambulla, enjoy a two-hour e-bike tour of nearby villages to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s culture and customs. Cycle along peaceful paths through lush landscapes, enjoying a pit stop for a tasty local snack.
Afterwards, join your driver for the three-hour journey south to Madulkelle, admiring the hillside tea plantations as they begin to appear out of the windows. Immerse yourself in the community during a visit to a local family, sharing tea and a simple snack as you experience true Sri Lankan hospitality. Accompanied by a guide, there’s also the opportunity to try your hand at tea-picking in the fields.
Sample some more of Sri Lanka’s fabulous cuisine this morning during a private cooking demonstration. Join a local chef as they harvest fresh vegetables and herbs, then head to the kitchen to watch them prepare a selection of dishes and curries, sharing top tips along the way. And of course, the experience ends with a tasting – just in time for lunch.
Set among rolling green hills, the village of Madulkelle is at the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea-growing region. From here, you can explore the rich biodiversity of the Knuckles mountain range, which is home to more than 120 bird species. Binoculars at the ready this afternoon for a birdwatching experience with a private guide, who will help you spot Ceylon parrots, golden-fronted barbets, grackles, black eagles and black-hooded woodpeckers in their natural habitat.
Today, set off for Gal Oya National Park with your driver, a journey which takes around five hours. To break up the drive, make a pit stop at Trinity College Chapel in Kandy; the world’s largest open-air stone chapel. The chapel is normally closed to the public, but we’ve arranged a private, two-hour tour to explore its fascinating blend of Anglican worship and Sri Lankan Kandyan architecture. Often called ‘the chapel without walls’, it features imposing granite pillars, a high wooden roof and exquisite carvings. It’s also known for its intricate murals, which depict biblical scenes infused with Sri Lankan cultural elements. During your visit, stretch your legs with a walk along a rainforest trail; another opportunity to spot vibrant wildlife.
Following your tour, travel onwards to Gal Oya National Park and settle into the lodge that’ll be your home for the next two nights.
Gal Oya is home to one of Sri Lanka’s last remaining Veddha communities, an indigenous group thought to have been the country’s earliest inhabitants. Get a glimpse into their way of life during a meeting with the Veddha chief; exploring ancient hunting grounds, learning about medicinal plants and experiencing the Veddha’s deep connection with the jungle.
Later today, take to the water for a boat safari with a private guide. The national park is home to the largest man-made lake in the country, creating ample opportunity for wildlife sightings. Look out for crocodiles, buffalo, wild boar and monkeys, and if you’re lucky you may even spot rare animals like panthers or racoon cats. The highlight of this trip is the chance to see Sri Lankan elephants swimming between the islands or cooling off in the water. The area is also brilliant for birdwatching, so keep your eyes peeled for the bright plumage of the pompadour green pigeon or the distinctive beak of the Sri Lanka grey hornbill.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Sri Lanka without some time enjoying the island’s tropical beaches, so today you make your way south to Ahangama. It’s a five-hour drive from the national park to this laid-back beach town, but you’ll soon forget the journey once you’re sipping sundowners on the sand.
Later today, visit a cinnamon farm to discover the history and cultivation of one of Sri Lanka’s most prized exports. The cinnamon produced on small farms like these accounts for 80% of the world’s highest-quality cinnamon. During your visit, gain a fascinating insight into the intricate methods used to grow and process this fragrant spice.
Your last full day in Sri Lanka is yours to spend as you wish. Ahangama is known for its surf and yoga scene, so you can while away the morning hitting either the waves or the mat.
Alternatively, there are opportunities to immerse yourself in local life; fishing on nearby Koggala Lake, visiting a vibrant food market or learning to cook a delicious Sri Lankan curry. As the sun sets on your final day, toast your trip with a cocktail or glass of wine on the beach, soaking up the last scenic views in this special place.
Sadly, it's time to leave Sri Lanka today. Your guide will pick you up for the three-hour drive back to Colombo airport, from where you'll make the journey home, either direct to the UK or connecting in the Middle East.
