Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Sri Lanka - Colombo – Makandura – Madulkelle - Sigiriya – Passikudah - Negombo
100% customisable for you
Today marks the beginning of your Sri Lankan family adventure. After the familiar pre-holiday scramble (snacks packed, passports checked, teenagers accounted for), make your way to the airport and board your overnight flight east. The flight to Colombo takes just under 11 hours, so get stuck into your holiday read, browse the plane’s film selection or simply drift off to sleep, ready for your holiday to begin.
On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred inland to Makandura, a 45-minute drive away from the bustle of the city. Your first night is spent at a restored colonial home overlooking a tranquil lake, so s pend the rest of the afternoon unwinding by the pool, stretching your legs in the gardens and sampling your first Sri Lankan flavours as dusk settles over the water.
This morning, meet your driver-guide and head into the highlands towards Madulkelle, a four-hour drive away. Here, rolling hills line the Knuckles Mountain Range, surrounded by crystalline streams and lush tea plantations.
After settling into your lodge, where you’ll be staying for the next two nights, head out on a private plantation tour. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you’ll learn how tea is grown and processed, from tender leaves to steaming cup, keeping an eye out for birdlife and the occasional sambar deer roaming the hills.
Once you’ve tasted the best of the local tea offerings, head back to your hotel for a tasty dinner.
Today, lace up your walking boots for a guided hike in the Knuckles Mountains. This challenging trek consists of trails that wind through forest, grassland and small villages, revealing sweeping views across layered hills.
Your guide will point out endemic flora along the way, bringing context to the landscape and enthralling even the grumpiest of teenagers. It’s an invigorating day outdoors – balanced by a relaxed evening back at the lodge, perhaps with a well-earned cup of Ceylon tea or an ice-cold smoothie overlooking the valley.
Leaving the hills behind, journey three hours north into Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, a region scattered with the remains of ancient kingdoms.
You’ll spend the next three nights in a luxurious hotel surrounded by wide skies and rural landscapes.
Once you’ve had some time to settle in, join local children in crafting some traditional Vesak lanterns. Made from bamboo and coloured paper, these delicate decorations are used during Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist festival – a hands-on and meaningful cultural introduction for parents and children alike.
Today, enjoy a fuelling breakfast before setting off to explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle.
Once a royal capital between the 11th and 13th centuries, the city is now a vast archaeological park dotted with stupas, palaces and intricately carved temples. As you cycle across the ruins, stop to admire the towering Buddhas of Gal Vihara and imagine what life might have looked like here nearly a thousand years ago.
Later, embrace Sri Lanka’s favourite pastime during a friendly cricket match with a local team. It may begin as a gentle introduction to the rules, but don’t be surprised if things get competitive – especially among the younger players.
Today, explore one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks: Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Rising dramatically above the surrounding plains, this 5th-century citadel rewards the steady climb with sweeping views across jungle and farmland.
Along the ascent, admire ancient frescoes painted directly onto the rock face and learn the story of King Kashyapa, who once ruled from this sky-high palace.
Later, continue to Vil Uyana for a tour of Sigiriya’s wilderness and wildlife. Here, discover endemic lemurs, vibrant butterflies like the blue tiger and blue mormon and marsh-dwelling crocodiles. You may also spot one of Sri Lanka’s most elusive creatures – the nocturnal loris.
This morning, travel for two and a half hours east towards the coast and check in for two nights at your luxurious beachfront accommodation.
Here, the pace shifts noticeably. Long stretches of soft sand meet calm, shallow waters, ideal for swimming and beach time. Spend the afternoon settling in, perhaps with a first paddle in the Indian Ocean or a family stroll along the sand.
Today offers a flavourful dive into Sri Lankan cuisine, perfect for any amateur chefs. Begin with a visit to a local market, where you’ll select fresh produce and spices among the hustle and bustle.
From there, you’ll be welcomed into a family home for a hands-on cooking experience. Learn to grind spices, stir fragrant curries and prepare traditional dishes before sitting down to enjoy the meal you’ve created together.
The afternoon is free for swimming, sunbathing or simply relaxing beneath the palms.
Wave goodbye to the beach today as you transfer to Trincomalee, an hour and a half away. From here, board your 90-minute flight back towards Colombo, where you’ll be privately transferred to your new hotel near Negombo.
In the late afternoon, head out onto the Negombo Lagoon by motorboat to observe the birds and local fishermen as they fish for shrimp, crabs, lobster and other small fish. Fishing has shaped life here for generations, and this hour offers a quiet but fascinating window into coastal tradition.
After breakfast, it’s sadly time to begin the journey home. Bundle the teens into the car for the private transfer back to Colombo Airport, where you’ll board for your 11-hour overnight flight back to the UK.
You’ll arrive the following day with sandy trainers, a new appreciation for Sri Lankan tea and perhaps even a slightly improved cricket technique.
