Ready to channel your inner cowboy or cowgirl? Andalucia is the place to do it. Over five days, you’ll learn all about the region’s equestrian heritage, sip world-class wines and, of course, spend some time in the saddle.

The backdrop for your horsy Big Short Break is the small town of Las Cabezas de San Juan, set in the rural heart of Andalucia. First on the agenda is a tour of a local Iberian horse farm, where you’ll learn all about the country’s most famous four-legged residents.

The fun ramps up with a guided horseback ride through Jerez de la Frontera’s golden landscapes. Along the way, pass rolling vineyards, where the blissful Spanish sunshine works its magic on every grape in sight, producing some seriously good sherry wine. We’d say that’s the perfect excuse for popping into a traditional bodega afterwards...

Next, it’s time for a different kind of horsepower as you hop in your hire car for a road trip to the Roman town of Ecija and the Parador de Carmona, where Renaissance elegance meets Moorish magnificence. By the end of your trip, you’ll likely be smitten by Andalucia’s charms – and its horses, of course…

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

The countdown is over, the bags are packed and excitement levels are officially sky-high – today’s the day you’re off to Andalucia.

Head to the airport, breeze through security and settle into the lounge for something bubbly before boarding your three-hour flight to Seville.

When you touch down, pick up the keys to your hire car and hit the road for the easy 45-minute journey to Las Cabezas de San Juan, a charming town in the heart of the Andalucian countryside. When you arrive, check in to your charming guesthouse set within a hacienda (a traditional country estate), your home for the next four nights.

The rest of the day is all yours, whether you’d rather amble around the countryside, greet a few farm animals or enjoy a lazy afternoon by the pool. Tonight, bypass any dinner deliberations with a restaurant recommendation from our local Concierge – just tell them what you’re craving.

Rise and shine early this morning, as you’re off to meet one of Andalucia’s most iconic residents – the elegant Iberian horse. After breakfast, head to a traditional farm and join a local rancher for a tour of the stables, where these purebred beauties are raised and cared for. With flowing manes, glossy coats and an almost regal air about them, they’re a testament to enduring equestrian traditions and expert breeding.

Your guide will introduce you to a few stars of the show, whose impressive collections of rosettes and trophies reflect years of racing success. They’ll also point out which ones love a bit of attention, and which are hoping you’ve come bearing treats – preferably a crunchy apple or two...

After plenty of oohing and aahing (and perhaps a little daydreaming about an Iberian horse of your own), it’s time to tear yourself away. Seek out a local tapas bar for dinner, where plates of fiery patatas bravas are best enjoyed with a sunset tipple. Sangria, anyone?

Horse lovers, you’re in for a real treat this morning. Head to Jerez de la Frontera, where you’ll meet your trusty steed for the day. Give them a good pat before being kitted out in riding gear, then saddle up and trot into the Andalucian countryside, with your private guide leading the way.

The trail winds through ancient olive groves and sun-dappled cypress trees, with trickling streams providing a well-deserved watering hole for your noble companion along the way. By the time you canter back to the stables, you’ll likely be sporting a grin from ear to ear.

All that riding is a thirst-inducing pastime. Luckily, you’re in Jerez – the birthplace of sherry. Pop into a traditional bodega and raise a glass to finding your stride in the saddle. Cheers, or rather, salud, to that.

Ready for a road trip? This morning, leave the hooves behind and hit the road in search of Andalucia’s historic treasures. The Roman town of Ecija is just a one-and-a-half-hour drive away, so roll the windows down, tune into our destination-specific playlist and let the singalong commence.

When you arrive, set off on a stroll along the streets, taking in the grand Gothic bell towers and ornate Renaissance palaces. Next, set your sights on the Parador de Carmona, a beautifully preserved Arab alcazar where mosaic-embellished interiors and peaceful courtyards await.

After the drive back, it’s time to dial things down a notch. Claim a sun lounger, soak in that oh-so glorious Spanish sunshine and crack open your holiday read. And, when the heat really starts to bite, embrace siesta o’clock with an afternoon snooze – a rite of passage when in Andalucia.

For your final night, leave dinner plans in the hands of our local Concierge, who’ll know just the spot for a celebratory final meal.

Time flies when you’re having fun and, sadly, it’s time to say adios to Andalucia this morning.

Gear up for the 45-minute drive back to Seville Airport, where you’ll return your trusty hire car, stock up on some Spanish snacks and then board your three-hour flight back to the UK.

You‘ll return home with a camera roll full of photos and enough memories to keep the thrill alive... until the next adventure calls.
