Head to the airport, whizz through security and bundle the little ones onto the plane for your flight to Ljubljana. You’ll spend around two hours in the air, so settle the inevitable debate over the window seat, whip out the travel games and try to master a few Slovenian phrases before landing.
Once you’ve touched down in the capital, pick up your hire car and hit the road for the two-hour drive north to Logarska Dolina Nature Park. Along the way, weave through alpine forests, catching glimpses of the snow-dusted Kamnik-Savinja Alps as you go.
When you arrive, check into a charming farmhouse, your home for the next two nights. Then, dine somewhere local before cosying up for an early night – tomorrow promises plenty more family fun.
Rise and shine – today’s all about muddy boots, rosy cheeks and a healthy dose of mountain air as you explore Logarska Valley with an expert herbalist.
Wander through wildflower-speckled meadows as they point out medicinal plants flourishing among the blooms, revealing how locals have harnessed their natural healing powers for generations. As you explore, see who can identify chamomile, basil and anise first, before some family deliberation over which is the most aromatic...
Next, continue to a nearby farm, where you’ll discover how local cream cheeses are infused with freshly-grown herbs – a true match made in heaven (and a rather delicious lunch).
As you amble back to your guesthouse this afternoon, round off your countryside capers by seeing how many sheep, cows and ponies you can spot grazing in the paddocks – much to the delight of little animal lovers.
Fancy taking your family adventure to new heights? Wolf down breakfast, then set your sights on Velika Planina, whether you’d rather whizz up to this alpine town by chairlift or tackle the climb on foot.
At the lofty 5,000ft summit, a storybook scene awaits: an adorable hamlet of wooden huts and grazing cattle. Continue your mountaintop mosey by peeking inside Marija Snezna Chapel, playing explorer in Veternica Cave or pottering around the village of Mala Planina.
Once the children’s tummies start rumbling, browse market stalls for Slovenian specialities like ajdovi zganci (buckwheat dumplings) and local cheeses, made using age-old shepherd traditions.
Then, come back down to Earth (by which we mean the Logarska Valley) and hit the road for the two-hour drive west to Bled, your peaceful hideaway for the next three nights. If your youngsters start excitedly pointing out the windows, there’s a good chance they’ve just clocked the sapphire waters of the lake…
Boasting azure waters and Slovenia’s tallest mountain as its backdrop, Lake Bled has certainly earned its poster-child status. Spend the morning hiking its forested trails and venturing across to the pint-sized Bled Island, where ringing the church bell is said to make dreams come true – we'd say another family holiday is a worthy wish...
Room for another lake in the family scrapbook? Drive 30 minutes to Lake Bohinj, then tackle Pokljuka Gorge, following cliff-clinging walkways (single file, gang).
Now for something even more high-octane. Ascend Straza Hill by chairlift, then clamber into a gravity-powered luge cart to speed down the 1,700ft downhill track. Hold on tight and channel your competitive streak as you twist and turn towards the finishing line. And, should one of the youngsters win the race, expect them to remind you time and again who beat who...
For a dinner fit for ravenous racers this evening, tuck into bograc, an aromatic stew of meat, potatoes and paprika.
Roaring appetites all around this morning? You’re in for a real treat today.
Don your best farmyard attire and make your way to a traditional dairy barn run by a local family, where butter and cheese are prepared using time-honed techniques and antique equipment. As you explore, little ones can fire off a whole host of questions, like how does milk become cheese, what exactly does a churn do and, crucially, can they meet the cows?
Once you’re sufficiently versed in all things dairy, there's just one matter left to investigate – how it all tastes. Nibble your way through the farm’s very own cheeses and a selection of smoky sausages popular across the region, then finish on a sweet note with a slice of potica, a Slovenian cake traditionally enjoyed on special occasions.
Suitably stuffed, thank your hosts and wave goodbye to the farm animals before ambling back to your guesthouse.
Another day, another adventure. Today, we’ve secured you tickets for the Vintgar Gorge, so fuel up with a hearty breakfast and head out for a hike along its wooden walkways.
Follow the roaring Radovna River as it tumbles through the canyon between the Hom and Borst mountains before reaching Sum Falls, where cascading torrents of water send cooling mist swirling through the air (cue a scramble for the waterproofs). Then, loop back via a different trail, passing the Church of St Catherine as the Karavanke Range and mighty Mount Triglav fill the horizon.
Back in Bled, buckle in for the one-and-a-half-hour drive south to Postojna.
When you arrive, herd the excitable children into your alpine lodge, then bypass any dinner deliberations with a restaurant recommendation from our local Concierge – just tell them what the youngsters are craving.
Hushed whispers and binocular-wielding skills are the name of the game today as you meet a local ranger to explore the Sneznik region, home to wild brown bears.
Along the way, you’ll receive the lowdown on bear behaviour – including where they’ve been roaming recently – so keep your fingers crossed for a glimpse of one lumbering through the ancient woodland. If luck’s really on your side, you may even spot bear cubs padding dutifully after their mother or trying their paws at tree-climbing. Hearts are sure to melt.
Although rarely seen in the flesh, wolves and lynx are also present in the area and leave a trail of telltale clues behind. Your guide will point out paw prints in the earth and tufts of fur snagged in the branches – signs that while you’ve been snoozing, these nocturnal animals have been exploring.
Over dinner somewhere local tonight, expect plenty of excited chatter on all things bear between bites...
Commence the oohing and aahing today as you head to a historic farm to meet one of Slovenia’s national treasures: the elegant Lippizan horse.
Join a local rancher for a tour of the stables, where you’ll meet these purebred beauties – all flowing manes and glossy snow-white coats. They’ll point out which ones love a bit of attention, and which are hoping you’ve come bearing treats – preferably a crunchy apple or two...
Next, delve into the Lipizzan’s history at the museum, where an impressive collection of rosettes and trophies reflects years of equestrian excellence. Then, take your seats for the main event: a performance by the dressage school, where skilled riders take the reins and the Lipizzans take care of the fancy footwork. Suitably wowed, brace yourselves for a few rounds of ‘can we have a pony?’ on the journey back to your lodge...
After breakfast, fire up the hire car for the 45-minute drive to Ljubljana, playing a game of I-Spy to keep the youngsters entertained along the way.
When you arrive in the capital, return your trusty hire car and make your way to your guesthouse in the heart of the city – your base for the night.
Then, for a luxurious spell of sightseeing, make your way to the waterfront and board a traditional wooden boat for a cruise along the Ljubljanica River. With Gothic spires and Baroque facades reflected in the water, sit back and watch centuries of Roman, Venetian and Austrian influence drift by along the riverbanks. Meanwhile, put the little ones on dragon duty, scanning bridges for Ljubljana’s famous fire-breathing statues (fingers crossed you catch one mid-puff.)
