Once a favourite base for British pirates preying on Spanish treasure ships, Jamaica still provides safe haven for buccaneers, as long they’re under 12 and leave their cutlasses at home.

When not burying booty, children can learn to water-ski, dive, windsurf, sail, fish or go on snorkelling trips to coral reefs. For landlubbers there is tennis (with a pro to provide coaching) and excellent kids clubs that run a wide range of activities from nature walks and donkey rides to arts & crafts and reggae lessons.

Dem parents also have it good, with excellent restaurants, renowned spas and bonfire-lit barbecues on the beach, accompanied by calypso music and a steel band.

Original Travel can also organise a variety of excursions, including a boat ride along the Black River to explore mangrove swamps and see birds and crocodiles; a trip to the cascading Dunns River Falls, horse riding and tours of working plantations.
