Chichén Itzá

The ruins of Chichén Itzá are among the most impressive archaeological sites of the Americas; certainly among the largest and best maintained sites in Mexico. Listed by UNESCO, the site was also crowned one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. It is actually two cities: one that was ruled by the Mayans during the sixth to the 10th century; the other a Toltec-Mayan city that emerged around the year 1000 A.D. Most of the prominent buildings were developed during the city's "rebirth" under Toltec rule.
