Named after the sound the sand makes when you tread on it, Nkwichi (which literally means squeaky sand) is a slice of undiscovered paradise on the shores of Lake Malawi.
This eco friendly lodge is comprised of a total of 6 large chalets, including a family chalet and 1 reserved for honeymooners, and 2 private houses hidden in and amongst the lush landscape. Their discreet positioning allows for total privacy, and guests can whittle away the hours in the huge suites without seeing another soul. The chalets are made entirely by hand, and are rustic with thatched roofs, open plan bedrooms exposed to the elements and showers and baths built into the rocks.
Being where it is, in other words quite far away, Nkwichi is off the grid. Ipod docks and teles are swapped for the sound of fishermen banging their nets together, hot water is created by wooden fires, and the light is solar powered. This, however, is part and parcel of the charm of the lodge, and there is so much to do without the mod cons we are used to.
Lake Malawi is the 9th largest freshwater lake in the world, and as a result looks remarkably like the sea, just without the bitter taste of salt. Swimming, snorkelling, canoeing and sailing are all possible on the lake, and the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches are the perfect setting in which to do any of the above. The lodge has its own catamaran, ideal for day trips up and down the shores, as well as a dhow boat which can be used to explore the nearby coves.
There are plenty of on land activities on offer as well, from walking and bird watching to a tour of Likoma Island, and not forgetting the Manda Wilderness Reserve. The latter is home to a variety of wildlife, including cheetah, elephant, reedbuck leopard and over 300 species of bird. Camping trips can also be arranged from the lodge into the reserve.
Dining is an experience in itself at the lodge. The food is delicious and made from locally sourced ingredients, however it is where not what that is most important. Guests can choose from a number of locations, from the shores of Lake Malawi to the privacy of their own chalets.
Of course, relaxation is key to any holiday, and plenty of it can be done at Nkwichi. The phones are already turned off, so take to the beach with a good book and soak in the beauty of the surroundings.
