While of course at either end of this 440 mile stretch of road lie two of most famous cities in America, which are both worthy of an entire trip of their own, there are some unmissable stops to be made along the way.
If you're lucky, you may be able to spot whales from the road, but stop in Monterey and head out in a boat to get a closer view. If the sight of all those beaches from your car are just too tempting, stop off at Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, or any of the many other beaches the Californian Coast has to offer to join the surfers in the water. For a more cultural stop-over, check out Hearst Castle just near San Simeon to soak up the history of this impressive property.
