Craving island life with a dash of adventure? Then La Palma is just the ticket. One of Spain’s lesser-known Canaries, it’s nicknamed ‘Isla Bonita’ (beautiful island) – and on a road trip with stays in two coastal locations, it doesn’t take long to see why.

This six-day journey kicks off in Santa Cruz, where you’ll embark on a guided walk to discover its colourful streets, lively markets and sunlit squares. Step inside the city’s oldest house before rounding things off with a rooftop aperitif overlooking the Atlantic.

Next, hit the road west to Tazacorte, where the scenery shifts and the island’s wilder side comes into play. Start with a guided hike through Las Tricias, uncovering caves and ancient dwellings carved into the rock, then take things up a notch with a hike across the lunar-like slopes of the Tajogaite volcano, shaped by the 2021 eruption. Finally, reward yourself with a well-deserved siesta back in the sunshine – does it get any better than this?

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your journey to Spain begins with a flight to the island of La Palma. Head to the airport, breeze through security, grab a snack and settle in for take-off – the four-hour flight gives you just enough time to watch a film or brush up on your Spanish before the adventure begins.

When you touch down, pick up your hire car and drive to your hotel in Santa Cruz de La Palma, your home for the next two nights.

Check into your guesthouse, drop your bags and embrace la buena vida (the good life) with an afternoon siesta, a dip in the pool or a lounge in the sunshine, letting the warmth work its magic.

By the time evening rolls around, ask our Concierge for their favourite local spot for dinner before heading back for an early night – tomorrow promises plenty more excitement.

Rise and shine: today, you’re exploring Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island’s capital.

Alongside a local guide, a mble through a tangle of alleys complete with wooden balconies overhead, laundry swaying in the breeze and glimpses of the Atlantic. This is very much a go-with-the-flow kind of morning, so follow whatever catches your eye – dip into a market for fresh fruit, browse handcrafted souvenirs or sit al fresco at a tapas bar for some patatas bravas. All around you, locals catch up over coffee, while street musicians fill the air with flamenco tunes.

Along the way, step inside the city’s oldest house for a chance to meet the family who still live there. Once you’ve been given a tour, climb up to the rooftop for an aperitif overlooking the Iglesia de El Salvador Church. Raise a glass (or two) of sangria as the late-afternoon light casts everything in a golden glow – salud to that.

Hit the road this morning as you drive from the east coast to the west. The journey to Tazacorte takes one hour, so roll the windows down, tune into our destination-specific playlist and pull over at viewpoints when the scenery demands it (which is often).

When you arrive, check into your guesthouse – home for the next three nights.

In the afternoon, lace up your best walking shoes for a hike in Las Tricias, a peaceful hamlet north of Tazacorte. With a private guide, explore caves and ancient troglodyte dwellings carved straight into the rock, passing old windmills and rustic taverns dotted along the trails. Along the way, your guide will bring it all to life with legends and local insight, offering a window into life here long before modern-day La Palma.

After a jam-packed day, keep things low-key this evening. Head down to a restaurant on the coast, go for whatever looks good on the grill and round it all off with some gelato.

Make sure to fuel up at breakfast this morning – you’ve got quite the adventurous day ahead. With a private guide, set off to hike the slopes of the Tajogaite volcano, formed during La Palma’s 2021 eruption – an event that totally reshaped this part of the island over 85 days.

Follow trails across the ash-covered landscape, trudging over crunching lapilli and hardened lava. Your guide knows the best spots to pause, catch your breath and admire views of the Canary Island pine trees rising from the blackened ground. Make sure to snap plenty of photos while you’re here – this is prime holiday album material.

For your final full day in La Palma, the time is yours to enjoy. Dip in and out of the ocean, bask in that oh-so-glorious sunshine and linger over long lunches. By the end, you’ll likely be completely smitten with the island’s easygoing charm.

Still raring to go? We can also organise a walk through Barranco de la Galga, for a more tropical contrast.

Sadly, it’s time to say adios to La Palma. After a hearty breakfast, gear up for one last drive to Santa Cruz Airport, around 45 minutes away. Return your trusty hire car, check in for your flight and settle in for the journey home.

You’ll spend around four hours in the air – plenty of time to start dreaming up your next European escape...

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

A WONDERFULLY WILD WALK THROUGH BARRANCO DE LA GALGA

Just can’t get enough of La Palma’s nature? Head out on a hike through the Barranco de la Galga ravine, where the landscape takes on an almost tropical feel. Follow the trail as it winds through the ravine, keeping an eye on the canopy above – who'll be the first to spot a sparrow hawk soaring overhead? Down below, lizards dart through the undergrowth, leaves rustle underfoot and every step takes you deeper into the wilderness. At the end of the trail, reward yourselves with a well-earned coffee, still half-lost in that lush, leafy world.
