This week-long journey through Portugal pairs three very different sides of the country: the historic streets of Evora, the windswept beaches of Comporta and the lively hills of Lisbon. Together, they make a pretty convincing case for Portugal being one of Europe’s most romantic destinations.

Begin in the Alentejo region, where whitewashed villages, olive groves and vineyards stretch across the countryside. Evora, a UNESCO-listed city packed with Roman ruins, tiled houses and excellent wine bars, sets the tone nicely. Then, head west to Comporta, long loved by Lisbon locals for its pine forests, rice fields and huge sandy beaches that seem to go on forever.

Finally, finish in Lisbon, where yellow trams climb steep streets, rooftop bars spill onto terraces and fado music drifts from tucked-away restaurants after dark. Along the way, there’s time for wine tasting, market wandering, seafood lunches and sunset stops you hadn’t quite planned for – which is usually when Portugal is at its best.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Portugal adventure begins today. Head to the airport, speed through security and relax in the lounge before boarding your flight to Lisbon, just under three hours from the UK. After collecting your hire car, head two hours east towards Evora, watching the scenery gradually shift from city suburbs to olive groves, cork oak forests and rolling vineyard landscapes.

You’ll spend the next two nights just outside the city, so check in, drop your bags and head into Evora for an evening wander. The city glows beautifully at golden hour, especially around the Roman Temple and Cathedral Square, where you can join the locals as they spill onto terraces over glasses of Alentejo red and plates of cured ham.

This morning, meet your private guide for a walk through Evora’s UNESCO-listed old town. The city has been shaped by the Romans, Moors and Portuguese royalty over the centuries, and the layers of history can be seen in its spectacular architecture and illustrious monuments.

As you wander, your guide will point out the city’s highlights, including the Roman Temple of Diana, the imposing cathedral and the slightly eerie Chapel of the Bones, where stone walls are lined with human skulls.

Beyond the monuments, Evora is simply a lovely place to spend time. Browse tiny wine shops, stop for coffee beneath orange trees and wander through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses decorated with colourful tiles.

If you fancy diving deeper into Alentejo’s food and wine scene, we can also arrange a tasting and long lunch at a nearby vineyard in the Reguengos de Monsaraz region.

Leave Evora behind this morning and continue west towards the Atlantic coast. Along the way, detour through some of Alentejo’s most beautiful hilltop villages: Estremoz, known as the ‘white town’ thanks to its marble buildings, is perfect for a coffee stop, while Medieval Monsaraz boasts sweeping views across the Guadiana Valley, cute cobbled lanes and castle walls that feel almost frozen in time.

By afternoon, arrive in Comporta and check into your hotel for the next two nights, set just moments from one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches. Spend the evening with a cocktail on the rooftop terrace before enjoying a tasty dinner of fresh seafood and petiscos (Portuguese tapas) as the sun dips behind the dunes.

Comporta is the kind of place that encourages you to spend all day outdoors – think pine forests, cork oak groves and rice fields stretching inland, while enormous sandy beaches run along the Atlantic coast for miles.

Today is yours to enjoy however you like. Walk the dunes, swim in the ocean or settle into a beach restaurant for grilled sardines and a cold glass of wine with your feet practically in the sand.

If you feel like exploring further, nearby Alcacer do Sal makes a lovely afternoon detour, complete with riverside streets, old churches and a hilltop castle. On the way back, stop at the fishing port of Carrasqueira, where weathered wooden piers stretch into the marshes (cameras at the ready…).

Still raring to go? We can also arrange a private horseback ride along Comporta’s beaches at sunset.

Hit the road towards Lisbon today, but not before making a few worthwhile stops along the coast. The market in Livramento is packed with seafood, local produce and enough fresh fish to make lunch decisions difficult. Further north, the Serra da Arrabida coastal road delivers spectacular Atlantic views, with white limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise water below.

Arrive in Lisbon this afternoon and settle into your hotel near Avenida da Liberdade. After a few hours spent relaxing, head out into the city this evening. Wander through Bairro Alto, catch the sunset from a miradouro or settle into a local restaurant, where fadistas perform traditional Portuguese music late into the night.

Lisbon is best explored without too much of a plan. Spend today hopping between neighbourhoods, viewpoints and cafes, watching as the city slowly reveals itself.

Marvel at the Elevador da Bica funicular, browse independent shops in Chiado or wander through Alfama’s maze of steep lanes, where laundry hangs above the streets and trams squeeze around impossibly narrow corners. Stop for a bica (Portuguese coffee) and a still-warm pastel de nata at a local pastelaria, or head to Belem for riverside walks and local landmarks.

If you’d prefer to dive deeper into the city, we can also arrange for you to explore Lisbon’s historic centre with a private guide.

Come evening, picnic in Eduardo VII Park, sip cocktails overlooking the rooftops or toast to your trip over dinner beside the Tagus as Lisbon glows gold in the fading light.

Enjoy one final morning in Lisbon before you head home. If time allows, hop across the Tagus by ferry to the Cacilhas district for fresh seafood and one last panoramic view back towards the city skyline.

Then, it’s time to return the car, breeze through the airport and board your two-and-a-half-hour flight home – probably already plotting how soon you can come back for another round of Portuguese wine, seafood and sunshine.
