Fancy a side of calm with your captivating city break? On this six-day escape to western Portugal, split your time between the storied streets of Lisbon and the countryside charm of A Dos Cunhados, a serene slice of paradise tucked away in the rural regions north of the capital.

Kick off with three nights in Lisbon, a bustling bohemian gem with iconic sights to boot (we’re looking at you, yellow trams). Between private tours of the city with a clued-up local guide and solo excursions to the scenic viewpoints of Cacilhas, you’ll discover the many faces of the capital. Along the way, indulge in some (or all) of the delicious local delicacies. Pastel de nata, anyone?

Next up: swap city sleek for countryside charm with a short drive to the quiet refuge of A Dos Cunhados. Seriously scenic, this pretty little village is nestled in the heart of nature, welcoming travellers to recharge their batteries away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon. Here, crowds are few, the pines are fragrant and the dunes are just waiting to be explored (walking shoes at the ready?). It’s time to slow down, rest up and tuck into even more tasty treats – with plenty of fresh seafood on the menu.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Big Short Break to Lisbon starts today with a three-hour flight to Portugal’s vibrant capital. Head to the airport, whizz through security and enjoy some downtime in the lounge, grazing on complimentary nibbles (yes, please) while you wait for departure.

When you land, a private driver will be waiting to whisk you off into the heart of the capital. Here, you’ll check in for two nights at a centrally located hotel. After a spot of unpacking and post-flight stretching, make the most of your first evening by enjoying a celebratory drink at one of our favourite rooftop bars (just ask your Concierge for directions) before retreating to your hotel to rest up for a busy day of exploring tomorrow.

Rise and shine. It’s your first full day in Lisbon, and there’s not a moment to waste. Today is all about discovering the delights of the capital, which centre around its bohemian atmosphere, artistic charm and buzzing tramways.

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, meet your clued-up local guide for a relaxed walk around the city. As you uncover a series of secret spots, you’ll hear stories about Lisbon’s layered history. Between stops at iconic sites, make sure to visit a few under-the-radar spots too. Think private mansions, small churches and forgotten convents, alongside hidden markets, galleries and pocket bars dotted about the city.

This afternoon, escape the crowds (phew) with a visit to Cacilhas, a pint-sized paradise just a short ferry ride away. While you’re on the water, enjoy excellent views of the Tagus estuary, the 25 de Abril Bridge and Lisbon’s skyline. When you arrive, head to Jardim do Rio for more panoramic views across the capital before taking a lift to a 165ft viewing platform. While the sun sets, savour the sights over a dish of grilled fish or sauteed prawns.

Swap the cosmopolitan charms of Lisbon for the serene coast this morning as you collect your hire car and set out on the hour-and-a-half drive to A dos Cunhados, just north of Lisbon. Located on the beautiful shores of Grande Lisboa, this secluded spot is part of the municipality of Torres Vedras, which sits about nine miles inland.

When you arrive, stow the car away and check in for three nights at your next home away from home. After freshening up, venture out into the streets for dinner – time to ask your Concierge about the best seafood restaurant in town.

You have two days to soak up as much of this humble haven as possible. So, grab your swimsuits and hit the coast. While all the beaches in the area are suitably scenic, the cliff-cuddled Mexilhoeira beach is a must-visit. If you’re here between September and April, you might even be able to collect mussels.

Fancy something a little more active? Pedal along cycle paths and dirt roads to reach the ruins of the Penafirme Convent, the Santa Rita beach and Porto Novo, where the river meets the ocean. Perhaps you’d prefer to exercise your green thumb(s)? Take part in an introduction to organic farming, a composting session or a tree planting workshop.

If you’re keen to venture a little further afield, there’s plenty to explore. Head out to sea on a fishing trip, visit Obidos, one of the most beautiful towns in the country, catch an auction in the port of Peniche or hop on a cruise to the beautiful Berlengas Islands. Your hotel might even be able to provide a picnic basket to take with you on your travels – what a treat.

Sadly, the time has come to bid Portugal a fond farewell and embark on your journey home. After one last delicious breakfast at your hotel this morning, hop back in your hire car and drive an hour and a half back to Lisbon.

Once you’ve returned the car, whizz through security, browse some souvenirs and slip away to the lounge for some peace and quiet. The flight back to the UK is three hours, giving you plenty of time to sit back, relax and refine that oversaturated camera roll.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

DINE IN ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN LISBON

Located in the upmarket Chiado district, the setting for tonight’s dinner is a retro restaurant run by a creative Portuguese chef. Revisiting classic recipes from the national repertoire and infusing them with African spices, his dishes are renowned for their style and flavour. While you’re here, don’t forget to explore the on-site mercearia (market) where you can buy local delicacies, gifts, books and kitchen accessories. There is also a taberna (tavern), which offers simpler seafood dishes and one of the best views in the city – talk about a feast for the senses.

SINTRA AND SURROUNDS BY 4x4

A few miles out of Lisbon, the tiny town of Sintra has always shone brightly, thanks to its pretty palaces and characterful castles. But there are some surprises to be found here, too. Explore the city and its suburbs aboard a jeep, crossing through Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and enjoying breathtaking views of the coastline. Afterwards, park up and tuck into an outdoor lunch of typical Portuguese flavours (all washed down with some superb local wines, of course).

SURF’S UP IN SANTA CRUZ

For surfers old and new, Santa Cruz’s swells always deliver. Located just north of Lisbon, this bustling beach entertains water sports enthusiasts year-round. Boasting consistent waves, gentle crests and stunning views, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.
