Jordan - Amman - Petra - Wadi Rum - Dead Sea
100% customisable for you
History buffs, listen up: your foray into Jordan’s past begins today. Head to the airport, whizz through security and enjoy some nibbles in the lounge before boarding your five-and-a-half-hour flight to Amman, the country’s captivating capital.
Once you’ve landed this evening, you’ll be assisted through the airport and introduced to your friendly driver, who’ll be accompanying you for the next five days. After the speedy 40-minute transfer to your hotel, grab a quick bite to eat and head straight up to bed, ready for the real excitement to begin tomorrow.
Kick off your first full day this morning with a visit to Jerash. Set just a few miles north of Amman, this vast archaeological site was once the ancient Roman city of Gerasa, which was abandoned in the 13th century and remained buried under sand for centuries before its rediscovery in 1806.
Alongside a private guide, spend the morning exploring this vast Greco-Roman site. While the Middle East contains other surviving Roman cities, Jerash stands out as the best-preserved, complete with towering colonnades, majestic arches, stone amphitheatres and grand gateways.
After a tasty Jordanian lunch at a local restaurant, head back to Amman for a guided tour of the city. Stop at notable hotspots, including the Roman Theatre, Citadel and Gold Market, while also venturing into narrow alleyways, hidden avenues and bustling boulevards for a glimpse into lesser-seen local life.
Rise bright and early this morning and meet your driver to begin the journey to Petra along the King’s Highway, a 174-mile road known for its rich history and stunning scenery. Along the way, stop at Madaba, Nebo and Kerak, learning all about their past with a knowledgeable guide.
Begin at Madaba, a historic city best known for its spectacular church and stunning Byzantine and Umayyad mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Then, move on to Kerak Castle for a glimpse into its famous Crusader fortress, a maze of stone-vaulted halls and winding passageways, before visiting Mount Nebo, a mountaintop memorial of Moses with captivating views over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the River Jordan.
Finally, finish the day in Petra, where you’ll check in for two nights at a nearby hotel. You’ll likely be tired after your jam-packed day, so enjoy a peaceful dinner at your hotel – mezze, anyone?
Today is entirely dedicated to discovering Petra. Dating back to around 300 BC, this incredible city was carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabatean people, an ancient Arab people who settled here more than 2,000 years ago.
Rise early to beat the crowds, then meet your private guide and begin the walk into Petra. As your guide delves into its history, wander into the city through the Siq, a narrow gorge flanked by soaring 260ft-high cliffs. Then, wind your way past colourful formations and dazzling rocks into this remarkable site, passing the Djinn Blocks, the Roman Theatre and the famous Treasury. Eventually, you’ll reach the Qasr Al Bint Temple complex, built to honour an ancient pharaoh’s daughter, before stopping for a tasty lunch.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore Petra independently. To truly appreciate the profound scale of the site, climb up a flight of 800 rock-cut steps to a viewing point overlooking the valley and the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery. Cameras at the ready...
Wave goodbye to Petra this morning as you begin the one-hour-and-45-minute drive to Wadi Rum along the Desert Highway. Weather and wind have shaped this vast wadi (river valley), creating a maze of monolithic rockscapes that appear to rise up from the desert floor.
When you arrive, meet your guide for a private tour across Wadi Rum in a comfortable 4x4. As you glide through the desert wilderness, take in the sheer scale of its dramatic sandstone mountains, natural arches and watering holes, stopping to admire the 4,000-year-old pictures carved into the rock.
After a picnic lunch, you’ll be whisked to your traditional Bedouin camp, where you’ll spend an unforgettable night sleeping under the stars.
It’s your final full day in Jordan, so round off your trip right with a visit to the Dead Sea. This morning, meet your private driver and hop back in the car to begin the four-hour drive north, stopping en route in Aqaba for views over the sparkling water.
When you arrive, check in and spend the rest of the day as you please. Head down to the beach for a spot of sunbathing and a float in the highly saline water, lounge by the pool and watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand – it doesn’t come much better than this.
It’s sadly time for your whirlwind dive into Jordan’s history to come to an end. After one last tasty breakfast, you’ll be collected and privately transferred back to Amman Airport, a one-hour drive away, where you’ll board your five-and-a-half-hour flight home, landing back in the UK later the same day.
