Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Canada – St John’s – Trinity – Fogo Island – Twillingate – Norris Point
100% customisable for you
Rise and shine, your outdoorsy Canadian adventure begins today. Head to the airport, whizz through security and tuck into some tasty snacks before catching your six-hour direct flight to St John’s.
Upon arrival, pick up your hire car and drive to the city centre. St John’s is both the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador and one of the oldest and most easterly cities in North America. Check into your charming hotel for the next two nights and soak up the harbour views. Then drop off your bags and put your feet up or head out to explore your new surroundings.
Wake up bright and early, today is all about ticking off St John’s top sights. Wander along narrow alleyways for a spot of souvenir shopping before admiring the city’s craggy cliffs that plunge dramatically into the ocean.
Start in the city centre, where George Street, Water Street and Duckworth Street mark the edge of the lively Downtown district. Here, pubs huddle together and the noise of live bands spills out into the streets. Keen to escape the bustling activity? Head to Quidi Vidi, a peaceful village nestled against rocky cliffs, dotted with brightly coloured houses and a chapel around a charming fishing harbour. Continue on to The Battery neighbourhood, where pretty fishermen's cottages cling to the cliffs and create one of the city's most iconic views.
The day winds down at the southernmost point of the peninsula, where you might be lucky enough to spot a whale from the lighthouse if you’ve timed your visit between May and September.
Bid St John’s farewell this morning as you hop back in your hire car and set off for the small town of Trinity. Settle in and enjoy the scenic views as they roll past during the three-and-a-half-hour drive north.
Upon arrival, check in for three nights in your cosy accommodation in the heart of the town, then head out for a stroll and grab a bite to eat. Need some inspiration? Fear not, your clued-up Concierge will be on hand to recommend the top restaurants.
This morning, head out to explore the time-capsule town of Trinity. Once a hub for the construction of fishing vessels, its 19th-century homes and shops offer a glimpse into the past. Spend some time dipping in and out of art galleries and craft shops as you learn more about the town’s history.
Ready to explore further afield? Stretch your legs on one of the many hiking trails that wind around the bay, such as the Gun Hill Trail, which boasts the area’s highest vantage point and overlooks the cobalt-blue waters.
The Terra Nova National Park is also well worth a visit. Nestled at the head of Bonavista Bay, about an hour's drive away, the 159-square-mile site offers everything from meadows and spruce forests to ponds and rivers. On the horizon, admire the seriously swoon-worthy views as the coastline is carved by inlets.
This vast and diverse area also attracts a rich array of wildlife. Keep an eye out for lynx, black bears, moose and rare Newfoundland martens as well as boreal chickadees and pine siskins swooping overhead.
It’s time to wave goodbye to Trinity because today you’re setting sail for Fogo Island. Tune into our destination-specific playlist for the roughly three-hour drive north to Farewell, followed by an hour-long ferry crossing.
Upon arrival, check into your new home for three nights, perched on the island's northern coast.
Another day, another outdoorsy adventure. Today, you’ll explore Fogo Island, named the ‘Island of Fire’ by the Portuguese who sailed the region’s waters centuries ago on fishing expeditions. The name has stuck, though it feels quite different from this windswept northern islet. Crisscrossed by walking trails, the landscape is best explored on foot.
Lace up your hiking boots and embark on the Brimstone Head Trail, which leads you to a rocky outcrop for sweeping views (where better to snap a selfie?). Or set off on the Turpin's Trail instead, winding between grassy plateaus and a rocky coastline. This walking route isn’t far from the small town of Tilting, first used as a landing spot by French fishermen back in the 16th century. But it was the Irish who settled here permanently, and their culture is still felt to this day, from the charming houses to the traditional fishing huts.
Hop in your hire car and return to the port to catch your ferry back to the mainland, then continue driving east through the province. After a winding road that snakes between islets and steep cliffs, Twillingate will come into view. Nicknamed the ‘Iceberg Capital of the World,’ this small town is known for the colossal icebergs that drift through its waters each year, particularly in May and June.
Check into your hotel, unpack and enjoy the sea views. Once you’ve settled in, set off on a scenic stroll to Long Point Lighthouse, which has overlooked the Atlantic Ocean since 1876 and still watches over the rhythm of fishing boats coming and going.
Today, you’ll head out on a cruise among the icebergs. You’ll embark alongside your captain to observe the icy behemoths that have broken free from the ice floe or a glacier. Keep an eye out for wildlife too: think porpoises, seals, seabirds, and, if you’re lucky, even whales.
After your boat trip, you can learn more about local history at the Twillingate Museum, and about the Beothuk (the island's indigenous people) at the Boyd's Cove Interpretation Centre. You might also like to admire the small traditional fishing ports or take a drive to the waterfalls of Grand Falls-Windsor.
Rise and shine – you have a five-hour journey ahead as you drive east towards Gros Morne, Canada's second-largest national park on the Atlantic coast. The spectacular 458,000-acre landscape encompasses alpine plateaus, glacial valleys, coastal lowlands and tranquil lakes, offering a rare glimpse into millions of years of geology.
As your drive through the awe-inspiring landscapes along the Bonne Bay, the distinctive shape of Norris Point comes into sight. The town is a peaceful yet central base, perfect for exploring the northern peninsula and the park.
Gros Morne National Park is one of the only places in the world where you can walk on the Earth's mantle. Usually buried beneath the oceanic crust, it’s exposed here at the Earth's surface. Very little can thrive in this magmatic landscape, so it stretches out as a striking ochre desert landscape, commonly known as the Tablelands.
Today, you’ll take a cruise through the fjords of Gros Morne National Park, gliding along the waters of Western Brook Pond. Featuring 2,000ft cliffs and tumbling waterfalls, this glacier-carved fjord is one of the park’s most spectacular landscapes. Atlantic salmon, brook trout, and their Arctic cousins share these cold waters, while gulls skim across the surface above.
Sadly, it’s time to head home today as your Canadian adventure has come to an end. First, drive one hour to Deer Lake, where you’ll return your hire car and then catch a three-hour flight to Toronto.
Upon arrival in Toronto, you’ll board your international flight back to the UK. Overnight, direct flights take around seven hours, and you’ll land the next day, with a full camera and plenty of stories to share.
