Ready to discover eastern Canada? This 16-day journey traces a scenic loop from Quebec to New Brunswick, balancing time in historic cities with slower days shaped by nature and coastal life.

After a short stay in Quebec City, the route follows the St. Lawrence River to Bic National Park, where cliffs, forests and tidal inlets set the tone for the days ahead.

Crossing into New Brunswick, the journey moves between Acadian towns and wide-open landscapes. In Caraquet, French-Canadian heritage is still part of everyday life, while Miramichi and Kouchibouguac introduce a quieter rhythm of rivers, forests and open shoreline. Further south, Shediac leans into its reputation as the salmon capital, before the scenery shifts again around Fundy National Park, where the tides shape both land and sea.

The final stretch returns inland to Fredericton, then back along the St. Lawrence to Kamouraska and Quebec City. By the time you head home, the journey has taken in both sides of eastern Canada – from its cultural roots to its more remote edges – without ever feeling rushed.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Your Canada adventure begins today. Head to the airport, breeze through security and settle in for the seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Quebec City. Queue up a film, flick through a guidebook or simply watch the clouds drift by and think about what’s ahead.

When you arrive, pick up your rental car and make your way into the heart of Old Quebec. Check in, drop your bags and head straight out – the old town is compact and easy to explore, with cobbled streets, river views and plenty of spots to stop for a drink or a bite. If you’re feeling up to it, we can also arrange tickets to the Museum of Civilization.

After breakfast, hit the road and follow the St. Lawrence River east. It’s an easy three-hour drive, with the scenery gradually opening up into wide waterside views and quieter stretches of coastline.

Arrive at Bic National Park and settle into your hotel overlooking the water. Once you’ve unpacked, either take a wander in your new surroundings or just sit back and take it all in before a big day tomorrow.

Today, lace up your walking shoes and head out with a naturalist guide to explore Bic National Park. The landscape shifts as you go, from forests to rocky outcrops, with plenty to catch your eye along the way.

Keep a lookout for seals stretched out on the rocks and birds circling overhead. As you wander along the Les Murailles trail or stop at the Raoul-Ray lookout, you might even spot bald or golden eagles.

Afterwards, the rest of the day is yours, whether you’d rather continue exploring or reward your efforts with a slower afternoon.

Leave Quebec behind and cross into New Brunswick, heading towards the Acadian coast. The drive is calm and remote, with long stretches of road and glimpses of the sea along the way.

After around four hours, arrive in Caraquet and check into your hotel overlooking the bay. Settle in, freshen up and head down for dinner – local ingredients (paired with excellent wine, of course) await.

Today, step back in time and learn about the heritage, culture and traditions of the Acadians with a visit to the Acadian Historical Village. Wander between houses, workshops and farm buildings as daily life from centuries ago is brought back into focus.

Afterwards, head back to Caraquet and spend the rest of the day as you please – perhaps by the water or tucking into some local delicacies like pea soup, salted cod with cream and blueberry cake.

This morning, hop in the car and head south towards Miramichi, known as the ‘salmon capital of the world’. The hour-and-a-half drive weaves between the Acadian coastline, dense forest and winding rivers – keep your eyes peeled (and cameras at the ready) for some good photo opportunities.

Later, arrive in Miramichi and check into your hotel, where you’ll be staying for the night. Once you’ve dropped your bags and settled in, head out for a walk around the town. You might catch guides in historical costumes around Beaubears Island, stroll through waterfront parks like Ritchie Wharf or French Fort Cove or dip into the area’s Irish heritage on Middle Island.

After breakfast, continue south towards Saint-Louis-de-Kent, a small village with a big place in Acadian history: this is where the Acadian flag was designed and first raised. When you arrive, check into your hotel, where you’ll be staying for the night.

After dropping your bags, head out to nearby Kouchibouguac National Park, a few miles away. The park is closely entwined with the indigenous Mi’gmaq people, who have strong cultural and historical connections to the land. Spend a few hours wandering between beaches, lagoons and forest trails, keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way. If you fancy staying for the evening, the open-air theatre is worth a stop, with storytelling and music that shifts between French, English and traditional Mi’gmac.

After breakfast, set off towards Shediac. Break up the drive with a stop in Bouctouche, a city home to long, narrow sand dunes that stretch out for miles. Take the boardwalk across the sandy stretches for an easy (if slightly windswept) stroll, keeping your eyes peeled for local birdlife.

If you’re in the mood for something more lively, stop by Le Pays de la Sagouine, where performers in historical costume bring Acadian culture to life with a good dose of humour.

Later, arrive in Shediac and check into your stay in the centre of town, where you can enjoy a tasty dinner of local seafood before an early night.

After breakfast, leave Shediac behind and make your way towards Fundy National Park. It’s not a long drive, and, if you fancy breaking things up (perhaps with a quick coffee or a stop at the Acadian Museum), the small town of Moncton falls nicely on the route.

By the time you reach your next base, the shift in pace is pretty noticeable. You’re tucked into the forest here, close to the bay, with two nights to properly switch off. Things are a little more off-grid, which means no emails and no scrolling – just fresh air and the occasional sound of nature doing its thing.

Today is all about getting out into the landscape. Fundy has a bit of everything, with a dramatic stretch of coastline shaped by some of the highest tides in the world and a dense forest filled with maple, birch and spruce. If you’ve missed out on Canada’s wonderful wildlife so far, this is another good chance to spot some, so keep an eye out as you go.

Later, head to Hopewell Rocks for an exciting sea-kayaking trip. After a quick briefing, head out onto the water with your guide, paddling towards towering rock formations that rise up from the bay. The tides here shift dramatically, providing an insight into what’s carved these unusual shapes over time. Back on land, continue exploring Fundy before heading back to your accommodation for dinner.

This morning, follow the coastline south along the Bay of Fundy, crossing the city of Saint John. After admiring the rolling greenery and sparkling water, arrive in Saint Andrews-by-the-Sea and check into your stay for the night, tucked between Chamcook Mountain and Passamaquoddy Bay.

Once you’re settled and have enjoyed a tasty lunch, it’s time to head out on a catamaran for a whale-watching trip. Alongside an expert guide, glide through the water, keeping your eyes peeled for giant humpbacks and sleek Minke whales – truly a bucket-list experience.

Leave the coast behind this morning and head inland towards Fredericton, New Brunswick’s provincial capital. The two-hour drive takes you through long stretches of lush forest, with very little to distract you other than the changing light through the trees.

Arrive in Fredericton and check into your hotel, where you’ll be staying tonight. Once you’ve settled in, head out to explore. The historic garrison district is an easy starting point, and, if timings line up, you might catch the changing of the guard – think scarlet uniforms and bagpipes.

Today’s a longer driving day (around four hours), so take it as it comes and don’t feel the need to rush. There are a few good places to break things up along the way, from the Hartland Covered Bridge to Grand Falls, or even a wander through the botanical gardens in Saint-Jacques if you feel like stretching your legs.

By the time you reach Kamouraska, the St. Lawrence River is back in view and the pace shifts again. Check into your stay for the night, before heading out for a wander through the village before dinner. It’s often listed among Quebec’s most beautiful, and it doesn’t take long to see why…

After breakfast, follow the St. Lawrence back towards Quebec City. It’s an easy, scenic drive, so take your time and stop if anything catches your eye along the way. Arrive back in the city and check into your hotel in the old town.

Once you’ve settled in, head out for a final wander, then find a spot in town – our clued-up Concierge can provide some stellar recommendations – and enjoy your final night with a drink in hand.

Sadly, your Canada road trip comes to an end today. Squeeze in one last wander after breakfast before heading to the airport, returning your rental car and boarding your seven-hour flight home. You’ll spend the night on board, arriving home the following morning.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

VISIT QUEBEC’S MUSEUM OF CIVILIZATION

If you have time while in Quebec City, the Museum of Civilization is well worth a visit. Ever-changing exhibitions explore Quebec’s past in ways that connect it to the present, looking at perspectives from First Nations communities to more recent arrivals. The collections themselves are varied, ranging from historical artefacts to more unexpected pieces, so there’s sure to be something that catches your attention – even if you hadn’t planned to stay long.

NEW BRUNSWICK FOR THE FAMILY

If you’re travelling with children, this route is ideal: there’s enough variety to keep things interesting, with plenty of time outdoors (and just enough structure to balance things out). In Bic National Park, little ones can spot wildlife and explore the shoreline, while kayaking at Hopewell Rocks adds a bit of hands-on adventure. The whale-watching trip is often a highlight, even if it means a bit of patient waiting in between sightings. Along the way, places like the Acadian Historical Village bring history to life in a more engaging way, with costumed guides and interactive elements that make it easier to follow.
