Itinerary Highlights

Tour dates: July 2019

  • UK to Ulaanbaatar - 1 Day
Depart in the afternoon with Uzbekistan Airways to arrive into Ulaanbaatar the next day.
  • Ulaanbaatar - 2 days
We will spend two days exploring the city's excellent sights including a stroll in Chinggis Khan Square, and the Museum of National History to gain an understanding of Mongolia's remarkable past. In the evening we will enjoy an intimate performance of traditional music and dance including Khoomii (throat singing), before dinner at another one of the capital's excellent restaurants.
  • Mongol Nomadic Camp - 1 Day
After breakfast our adventure begins! We take 4x4s and head west towards the steppe to our first ger (yurt camp). Our friendly hosts will demonstrate how to spin wool, distil alcoholic drinks and how to milk the sheep and goats. We will have time to walk in surrounding area, ride or simply just soak up the atmosphere of the camp. Enjoy the golden light of "magic hour" before dinner in the restaurant ger and the endless starry skies.
  • Khustai Nuruu / Sweet Gobi Camp - 1 Day
Today drive to the Khustai Nuruu National Park in search of wildlife. The park is home to many deer, ibex and marmot and the wild Przewalski's Horses. These takhi horses were once native to Mongolia and almost became extinct earlier this century. This afternoon we journey to the next ger camp, the Sweet Gobi Camp situated on the most stunning plateau- a definite highlight of the tour.
  • Khugno Khan Mountain - 1 Day
Today we will visit the temples at Khugno Khan Mountain, deep within a 46,500 hectare natural reserve and the small but wonderfully restored monastery complex of Uvgun Khiid. In the late afternoon we will visit a camel herding family and camel trek across the dunes.
  • Horse ride/hike to Zanabazar Monument, School Visit & a Mongolian Feast! - 1 Day
Select your trusty steed if you are riding and we set off through the dunes in search of wildlife and to Zanabazar's monument for lunch. After lunch visit a local school in Burd Sum to learn about education in the steppes of Mongolia. Return to camp for a traditional Mongolian feast.
  • Kharkhorin / Erdene Zuu Monastery - 1 Day
Erdene Zuu Monastery or Hundred Treasures/Jewel Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. We will have the rare opportunity to learn about Mongolian Buddhism and shown around by an English speaking Abbott and watch a morning ceremony.
  • Turkic Monuemts & day to relax and explore Gurvanbulag - 2 Days
Today we will make our way to our next camp, the Gurvanbulag Camp, which is located in the midst of mountains, steppe and desert. From here you can take horses or hike to local families and explore the surrounding terrain, or simply relax and survey the glorious landscape and peaceful surroundings from camp. We will also visit Khooshoo Tsaidam monuments - two memorial installations erected by the Göktürks written in Old Turkic alphabet in the early 8th century.
  • 17 th Century Ruins / Private Nomadic Camp - 2 Days
After breakfast we journey back towards Ulaanbaatar stopping en-route at the ruins of Kitan and 17th century ruins of Khar Bukh Balgas and Tsogt Taij's White Castle. We stay overnight in a homestay of a local herding couple and in the evening enjoy a traditional home cooked meal with our hosts under a magnificent night sky - and listen out for the wolf cry! The following morning we will visit a local ovoo - or Shaman's alter and forage for berries en route in the forest. Ovoos are sacred stone heaps used as altars or shrines in Mongolian folk religious practice and are usually made from rocks and wood. Then it's time to return back to the capital for a farewell meal.
  • Ulaanbaatar
Early morning transfer to the airport to catch your international flight home.
