Cote d 'Azur, Provence and Alpilles

A journey between the coast and the back country This is a road trip between two landscapes that have often inspired great artists, from Matisse to Picasso, Renoir and Chagall.

A Provencal art trip: from Matisse to Gehry

Fluctuating between the azure and the ochre, your journey takes you on a discovery of the major artistic foundations of the region: the Maeght Foundation of Saint-Paul de Vence, Fondation Carmignac on the island of Porquerolles, Chateau La Coste in the Luberon, and the Luma Foundation in Arles. As well as some amazing art, this itinerary includes staying in beautiful hotels and eating in some of the finest restaurants in each region.
The discovery of these collections is experienced alongside a specialist or on your own; we can even arrange tours of certain places while they are closed to the public.

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAYS 1 & 2

Flight to Nice - Eze

Fly to Nice and pick up your hired vehicle and drive to Eze, a medieval village perched on a rocky spur over the Mediterranean. Topped by a beautiful exotic garden and the ruins of a castle, it offers stunning panoramic views of the French Riviera. Matisse, Renoir, Picasso, and Chagall all drew inspiration from it. Your hotel is nestled in this beautiful landscape.
Included in the itinerary - A private tour tracing the footsteps of the great art masters of the 20th century throughout this region.

DAY 3

Eze - Saint-Paul de Vence - Saint-Tropez

Included in the itinerary - Drive to Saint Paul de Vence and visit to the Fondation Maeght. This site is home to one of Europe's largest private collections of 20th-century paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works: Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Leger, Miro… An expert will tell you the story of these artists, their works and the foundation. In the afternoon, visit the Folon Chapel, which served as an artistic and poetic refuge for artists. Then drive back to your hotel for the night, in the Ramatuelle hills, sheltered by the pine forest.
Already booked - Your table at Colombe d'Or, for a delicious Provencal lunch.

DAY 4

Saint-Tropez

Included in the itinerary - a Day in Saint Tropez. This legendary glamorous spot has been a sanctuary for artists past and present. Contemporary art galleries are abundant here: Richard Orlanski, Paul Janssen and Caroline Dechamby are some of the essential stops you can make between a day at the beach and an evening at the harbour.
Included in the itinerary - Our Concierge service takes care of booking you loungers for the day and a table at the legendary Club 55.

DAY 5

Ile de Porquerolles - Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade

Board a private water taxi and head for Porquerolles. This enchanting island, the largest of the three that make up the Hyeres archipelago and bordered by turquoise waters and fine sand coves, now houses a place of contemporary art: the Fondation Carmignac. A simple farm until the 1980s, it was transformed into a villa by the architect Henri Vidal, before Edouard Carmignac, supported by several artists, set up a place dedicated to art. The 21,500 square foot space has been discreetly integrated into the protected natural landscape of the island. A special place has been given to great American artists from the 1960s to the 1980s and includes some iconic works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The young emerging scene, fine art photography, and photojournalism complete this unique space, where art is exhibited from the halls to the gardens, with a series of sculptures scattered throughout the vegetation. At the end of the day you'll return to the mainland and head to the gates of the Luberon, in the heart of a completely renovated 18th century farmhouse on an estate dotted with olive trees, cherry trees, cedars, and cypress trees, extended by 86 acres of vineyards.

DAY 6

Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade - Arles

Included the itinerary - An Art & Architecture walk. You'll head to Chateau La Coste. The estate combines biodynamic wines, architecture and modern art. Between the vineyards and the cellar, designed by Jean Nouvel, stands an art centre created by another starchitect, Tadao Ando of Japan. Outside are the works of Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Frank Gehry, Ai Weiwei and other great international artists. After your feast for the eyes, it's time to satisfy your taste buds: we've reserved you a table at Restaurant Francis Mallmann, where the artist's materials are Charolais beef on a fire pit. In the afternoon, you'll drive to Arles. Stay overnight at Arlatan, a genuine work of art by Cuban American Jorge Pardo.

DAY 7

Arles

Included in the itinerary - The Luma Foundation. Located in the workshop park, a former Arles industrial site, this cultural platform is still under construction (the main building built by Frank Gehry will open in 2020) and has a multidisciplinary exhibition itinerary. Every summer, the venue also hosts the Rencontres d'Arles (Arles Meeting), a must-see for photography, and the Les Suds world music festival. Lastly, after a final up close and personal tasting experience at the organic vegetable garden of La Chassagnette, Armand Arnal's Michelin-starred restaurant, you'll return home.
