Nestled within pristine rainforest on the banks of the Pacuare River, Pacuare Jungle Lodge aims to withdraw its guests from the modern world, and all its technological trappings, and bring them back to nature, in an idyllic setting.

Will, Hero and Ysobel are here to help give you the inside track.

The lodge is built out of wood from tree farms, and palm thatch collected by the Cabecar Indian neighbours from the surrounding forest. The bungalows manage to combine sustainable practices such as solar-heated water tanks, with comforts such as orthopaedic mattresses and spacious bathrooms. Each has a private veranda, and a private alfresco shower, not to mention a virtually 360º rainforest view. Rooms are lit with candles at night, which makes for a very romantic setting.

Spacious River Suites offer private terraces overlooking the tropical gardens, and rainforest. Those closest to the river can be lulled to sleep by the rushing current (read: light sleepers should head back into the canopy). The Linda Vista Suites are located higher in the rainforest canopy, with sublime views, and private plunge pools. The newest addition to Pacuare - the Jaguar Villa - is the most luxurious of all, with hardwood floors, private plunge pool, al fresco bathtub and separate living area, with space for extra beds for the kids. And of course all Suites and Villas include hammocks. A jungle stay essential.

Meals at Pacuare are created by the culinary team - a group of passionate cooks from local communities, who create a varied menu using the best, freshest ingredients. Much of the produce is grown at Pacuare's very own organic farm, Las Nubes de Tuis. Private dinners can be arranged under starlight, or for a unique dining experience, enjoy dinner up in The Nest - a treehouse in the rainforest canopy, and where the food is delivered by a pulley system.

For complete relaxation, head to the Jawa Juu Spa, which takes its name from the house of the Shaman. The Jawa Juu Spa takes inspiration from the Shaman's use of medicinal plants in their treatments, utilising local, natural products, and accompanied by the sound of the river flow.

For guests that can tear themselves away from the stunning views, hammocks and spa, there is a wealth of experiences to be enjoyed at Pacuare Jungle Lodge. For the adventurous, enjoy white water rafting or 'duckies' trips (inflatable kayaks), to explore the rapids of the Pacuare river, or enjoy climbing, rapelling and zip wires through the rainforest, and rock faces. This is a nature lovers paradise too, best explored on foot on one of the lodges extended trails. Finally, for an insight into the cultures and traditions of the Cabecar Indians - Costa Rica's largest indigenous tribe - guests can meet with a local shaman, in a Cabecar Rancho (thatched house).

Why we love it

Aside the fact that this is a wonderfully comfortable lodge, in a truly stunning jungle setting, Pacuare Jungle Lodge offers guests the unique chance to arrive at the hotel by river - on a white water rafting trip! This is a great way to acquaint yourselves with the Jurassic era-esque scenery, and stop off at waterfalls on route, for a refreshing dip.
