HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Dawn on the summit of Mont Blanc > Savoyard cuisine > Trek across the Mer de Glace > Alpine scenery in the summer
Mont Blanc was first conquered in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Dr Michel Paccard. For those interested in attempting the same feat, the guided climb is tough but rewarding, and should only be attempted by those in good enough condition for ten to twelve hours of effort at high altitude.
Many people attempt to climb Mont Blanc without any pre-training, making their chances of failure far higher. We strongly believe in not only using the most experienced guides in the Mont Blanc region but also preparing our clients to the highest degree possible before their ascent. We recognise that clients have come to climb the highest mountain in Western Europe and we want to do our utmost to increase their chances of success.
More than 80% of those who complete the training course successfully reach the summit of Mont Blanc. Specifically, the course has been designed in order to limit the occurrence of the main causes of failed attempts on Mont Blanc, namely insufficient equipment or training and a lack of practice in ice-climbing (including training in safety and a study of crevasse rescue techniques). Success is far more likely when climbing in good physical condition, and after sufficient acclimatisation.
After two days of practice and acclimatisation, and weather permitting, the ascent will be made via the Gouter Ridge route, often referred to as the 'traditional' route. Ascending Mont Blanc via this route means the climbing is more evenly spread over two days.
The ascent involves taking the train to Nid d'Aigle or 'Eagle's Nest' at 7,783ft, followed by a hike and then a climb up a rocky ridge to the Gouter hut at 12,454ft. The summit attempt starts early at 2am and mainly involves snow and glacier walking up moderate slopes to the final narrow ridges, which gradually steepen towards the summit at 15,767ft.
After your climb, relax with a night or two at one of Chamonix's best hotels: the Hotel Mont Blanc in the heart of the resort, or the luxurious Hameau Albert 1er - a chalet-style hotel with a spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
