The Kalighat Kali Temple, located on the banks of the Hooghly River, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kali. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, significant shrines of the goddess Kali, and is considered as one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The temple is said to have been bult in the 18th century and is known for its beautiful architecture, intricate carvings and striking façade. The temple has three main parts: the garbhagriha (or sanctum sanctorum), the mandapa (or the hall) and the porch, and during the annual Kali Puja festival — which is celebrated in October or November and is one of the most important festivals in Kolkata — the interior is adorned with lights and flowers, and the idol of the goddess Kali is decorated with gold and silver ornaments. On a guided visit, learn more about the temple and observe some of the traditional Hindu rituals that are performed here, including offerings of fruits, flowers and incense to the goddess Kali.
For visitors with a sporty streak, a visit to Eden Gardens shouldn’t be missed. The cricket ground is one of the oldest and most famous cricket grounds in India and has played witness to many legendary players and moments, making it a favourite attraction for cricket enthusiasts and one of the many iconic things to do in Kolkata. The club is the home of the Bengal cricket team and the Kolkata Knight Riders (both part of the illustrious Indian Premier League) and is known for its large and passionate crowds which often fill out its 66,349 seats, creating a unique and electric atmosphere during matches. Visitors can take a tour of the stadium to learn about the history of cricket in India and see the famous pitch. These tours often include a visit to the dressing rooms, the players' viewing area and the press box. You can also see the various trophies and awards won by the Bengal cricket team, a must-see for anyone who follows the sport, and look back at some of the most iconic moments of Indian cricket that have taken place here.
Park Street, also known as Mother Teresa Sarani, is a famous street in Kolkata. It is known for its colonial architecture, restaurants and nightlife, and is a popular destination for visitors who come to enjoy the local street food, explore the local shops and markets, experience the lively nightlife and browse the colourful art galleries. One of the main attractions of Park Street is its colonial architecture; the street is lined with beautiful heritage buildings — many of which have been converted into restaurants, cafes and shops — which encompass a mix of different architectural styles from Georgian and Victorian to Art Deco. This alone makes it one of the most visually eclectic things to do in Kolkata. Park Street is also known for its historical significance, as it is home to many famous buildings, like St. Xavier's College, the Asiatic Society and St. Paul's Cathedral.
The Indian Botanic Garden, also known as the Botanical Garden, is one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in India and is a popular tourist attraction. The garden was founded in 1787 by Colonel Robert Kyd, an army officer of the British East India Company, and spreads over an area of 270 acres. The garden features a wide variety of plants and trees, including rare and exotic species from different parts of the world. Visitors can explore the different sections of the garden — such as the cactus house, the palm house, the bonsai house and the rock garden — and enjoy a quiet moment beside the lake. What’s more, the garden is home to the Great Banyan, the largest banyan tree in the world, with a circumference of 1,082ft. This alone makes visiting the Botanic Garden one of the top things to do in Kolkata.
