Galapagos Surf & Yoga Safari
Ecuador & the Galapagos
The Galapagos are all about a rich variety of wildlife and a harsh but beautiful volcanic landscape, but now guests at Galapagos Safari Camp can combine these reasons to be there with a third (getting fit) and fourth (finding their inner zen) on a yoga and surf safari.
Believe it or not, yoga is a great way to learn to surf. Not only is it a way of learning to control breathing (especially useful when surfing), but the moves can mirror those in surfing. The first day explains why, and after that guests focus on balance, paddle stroke (or ‘steering the soul of the surf board’) and master the art of standing up (otherwise known, in yoga terms, as ‘one breath one motion pop up’).
After a few days of strengthening the core muscles while learning the key skills of surfing, guests take to the water, spending the day with an instructor on a long, white sandy beach, taking breaks to look for wildlife with a naturalist guide.
Wildlife is an integral part of the trip, and the daily yoga is broken up with trips to see some of the Galapagos’s infamous inhabitants. See giant tortoises and an abundance of birdlife - including the blue booted booby, finch and vermilion flycatcher - as well as a number of endemic plants.
The Galapagos Marine Reserve is the second largest in the world and snorkelling with sea lions here is a real highlight. Other activities on offer include kayaking and mountain biking.
Smooth yoga techniques are practiced on mats at the sea’s edge as a way of encouraging guests to feel more comfortable on their surf boards. Morning sessions focus on drishti and slack-line balance to help with stability on the surf board, steering the soul of the surf board to achieve a powerful paddle stroke, and the one breath one motion pop-up which helps achieve breathing control and optimal performance when standing on the board.
Wildlife excursions include visiting Garrapatero beach where the contrast of mangroves, black lava, white sand, turquoise water and birdlife is truly spectacular and a visit to the tortoise reserve to observe emblematic giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Guests also have the opportunity to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip snorkelling with sea lions and turtles. Sunset and sunrise meditation sessions are also used to help guests align their breath with the soothing rhythm of the ocean.
Depart London to Ecuador and overnight in Quito
Day 2: Giant Tortoises & Connecting Surfing with Yoga
Short flight to Galapagos where guests will be met by a naturalist guide at Baltra airport and taken across the narrow Itabaca Channel to the Santa Cruz highlands for lunch. There, they will have the opportunity to explore the area’s vegetation; made up of pit craters and lava tunnels, and understand the fascinating microclimates. Guests will also have the opportunity to see emblematic giant tortoises in their natural habitat at the nearby tortoise reserve. The day will conclude at the Galapagos Safari camp with a sunset introduction to the connection between surfing and yoga.
Day 3: Yoga Balance & Cruising to Uninhabited Islands
Following an early morning yoga/surfing session, guests will be taken on a boat to one of the neighbouring islands where they will be guided through the extraordinary evolutionary phenomena of the landscape. They will have the opportunity to snorkel off the boat in the Galapagos Marine Reserve – the second largest in the world!
Day 4: Multi-Sports & Surf Paddling in the East of Santa Cruz
In the morning, guests will explore the eastern part of the island. At 490m above sea level, Cerro Mesa hosts amazing views and has the largest crater on Santa Cruz island. The area is home to seven sub-species of finch and the vermilion flycatcher. In the afternoon, guests will visit the fascinating Garrapatero beach.
Day 5: Yoga & Snorkelling with Sea Lions
After an early morning yoga/surfing session, guests will spend the rest of the day exploring a neighbouring island and snorkelling with Sea Lions.
Day 6: Surfing in Tortuga Bay
Surfing in Tortuga Bay – accompanied by their instructor and assistants, guests will, in small groups, go through the various surfing techniques they have learnt and put them to the test on Tortuga bay. Meanwhile, the rest of the group will explore the island – which is teeming with wildlife – in the company of a naturalist guide.
Day 7: Sunrise Walk & Departure
The day will begin with a silent meditative sunrise walk followed by breakfast and transfers back to the airport.
Don't take our word for it...
It was absolutely fantastic and Original’s incredible organisation meant that we could float from place to place without ever having to even think and it was really all a bit of a dream!
All in all it really was the most wonderful honeymoon and exactly as we had wanted and imagined; an active but very special holiday, seeing some amazing and beautiful places, doing some really fantastic activities and staying in such comfortable and charming hotels, and all without having to even think about it! Our itinerary was lovely and full but in no way were we ever stressed or exha
