Original Travel offers a wide selection of the best safari lodges in Kenya, but for this trip we focus on those lodges that are best suited to going on safari with young explorers. Two of the best family-friendly lodges are Elsa’s Kopje, in the Meru National Park, and Loisaba, in the Laikipia region.

Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa – the lioness made famous by George and Joy Adamson in Born Free. What was once a very simple scientific research camp is now a luxurious safari lodge, enjoying panoramic views from its hilltop position. Meru National Park encompasses a variety of landscapes and habitats, and is home to a wider range of species than any other park in Kenya.

Loisaba is perched on the edge of the Laikipia plateau in central Kenya, only a few miles from the equator, with views towards Mt. Kenya. The lodge is surrounded by 61,000 acres of private wilderness (larger than many of Kenya’s national parks) and the property is also a working cattle ranch.

As well as excellent game viewing, between them Elsa’s and Loisaba offer a wide range of activities to keep children occupied and entertained, from fishing trips and hot-air ballooning to mountain biking, horse riding, camel trekking, sleep outs on ‘star beds’ and visits to tribal villages. Kids can also spend time learning about wildlife and bushcraft from local Samburu and Masai warriors.

Both lodges have special family-oriented accommodation units, with their own swimming pools, set slightly apart from the rest of the lodge. Children’s menus and child minders are also available, so parents can enjoy a relaxing massage or spa treatment knowing that everything is taken care of. Family holiday in Africa? Hakuna matata.
