Overlooking the Gulf of Finland, Tallinn, Estonia’s capital, is the best-preserved medieval town in northern Europe. Once a key member of the Hanseatic League that controlled trade in the Baltic, the cobbled streets of its unspoilt centre are still lined with former merchants’ homes, guild halls and warehouses.

The Old Town is encircled by its original city walls, punctuated by two dozen towers of various shapes and sizes which offer great views over the red-tiled rooftops below. Dominating the skyline is the spire of St. Olav’s church. This was once the tallest building in the world, and was used by the KGB as a radio mast during the Soviet occupation of Estonia.

The focal point of the atmospheric Old Town is Town Hall Square, where a Christmas market is held in the winter months beneath the magnificent Gothic town hall. From here, streets full of boutiques and cosy cafés radiate. A short walk along one of them brings you to the Three Sisters hotel, a beautifully converted property combing old-world charm with 21st century comforts.

Most visitors to Estonia don’t venture much beyond the compact Old Town of Tallinn, but to experience another side of the country it is well worth heading to the rural tranquillity of Muhu Island, where you will find the immaculate spa retreat of Pädaste Manor, set on the shores of the Baltic.

Here you can relax in peaceful seclusion, enjoying a range of innovative spa treatments and equally innovative cuisine, including elk carpaccio.
