HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
A boat trip along the Côte d’Azur, with lunch in a seaside village > Walking in the beautiful Lubéron National Park > The Pont du Gard – the three-tiered Roman aqueduct near Avignon.
One of the most evocative regions in the world, Provence has two very different sides to it: the glamorous Côte d’Azur, where Brigitte Bardot first popularised the bikini, and the rustic interior that inspired artists such as Van Gogh and Cézanne. Add the two together and you’ll understand why even the best-travelled people end up returning to Provence.
The French Riviera remains the most fashionable stretch of coast in the Mediterranean. Take a boat trip to explore Cap Ferrat or Cap d’Antibes, enjoying beaches, watersports and long lunches in the port-side restaurants of former fishing villages such as St. Tropez. Other attractions range from the flower market in Nice to the shops and casinos of Cannes and Monte Carlo.
There are several excellent hotels to choose from along the coast: Villa Marie or La Tartane, both near St. Tropez, Le Mas Candille, just inland from Cannes, or Le Château de la Chèvre d’Or - with its Michelin-starred restaurant - in the historic hilltop village of Èze.
Inland, the attractions of Provence are very different, but no less appealing. Wander round any number of picturesque villages, tasting local produce at farmers’ markets or sipping pastis beneath the plane trees of an outdoor café. Explore the region’s impressive Roman heritage in places like Arles, Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine, or go walking through fields of lavender and sunflowers. Stay at the immaculate Domaine des Andéols, occupying a rural hamlet in the heart of the Lubéron, or amid the rolling vineyards at Château de Berne.
For yet another aspect of Provence, head for the unspoilt wilds of the nearby Camargue, in the Rhône delta. Here you can enjoy excellent horse riding and see everything from flamingos to the famous long-horn Camargue bulls. Stay at Le Mas de Peint, a beautifully restored 17th-century farmstead situated on a 550-hectare estate.
For those keen to minimise their carbon footprint, Provence can be easily reached by train using France’s superb TGV network. This also makes it easy to combine your trip with a few days in Paris or the much under-rated city of Lyon.
