Steeped in history and surrounded by sandy beaches and azure seas, the sun-drenched islands of the Aegean represent the quintessential Mediterranean experience. Nor are they any longer just the domain of the package holiday - a range of excellent boutique hotels has now made some of them ideal destinations for a luxurious short break.

Of the thousand-plus islands scattered around Greece’s waters, we have selected Santorini and Mykonos in the Cyclades, and Greece’s largest island, Crete. Between them, these islands offer a combination of hedonism and culture that is hard to beat.

Cosmopolitan Mykonos is renowned for its nightlife (it has been described as the Ibiza of the Aegean), trademark windmills and its attractive ‘capital’ Hora, considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Cyclades. Hora also boasts the photogenic ‘Little Venice’ area, where the buildings overhang the sea, superb shopping, and restaurants ranging from chic sushi bars to cosy tavernas.

Crescent-shaped Santorini is perhaps the most famous Greek island, and physically one of the most spectacular islands in the world, with its giant sea-filled caldera created by an ancient volcanic eruption. The picturesque towns of Fira and Ia cling to the faces of towering cliffs that plunge straight into the sea. Santorini has black-sand beaches, archetypal Cycladic architecture with dazzling whitewashed houses and blue-domed roofs, and the archaeological wonders of Akrotiri and ancient Thera.

Crete has great diversity and offers everything from dramatic mountain scenery, golden beaches and secluded coves to ancient Minoan ruins and remote rural villages. It has the added attraction of direct scheduled flights from the UK, making it newly accessible for short breaks, and the Elounda peninsula is home to some of the finest hotels in Greece.

Each island offers something slightly different and has its own character, but all have something for everyone – sun-worshippers, water-sports enthusiasts, avid clubbers and culture vultures will find plenty to satisfy them.
