Although Venice is a year-round city-break destination, the best time to visit is autumn, when the temperature has dropped and the hordes of tourists are long gone. The city has a far more relaxed feel in autumn, making sightseeing a pleasure rather than a struggle.

A boat trip out to the islands of Murano and Burano is also very worthwhile, providing welcome respite from the bustle of the city centre. The art exhibitions of the Venice Biennale and the masked Venice Carnival are other highlights of the city's calendar, but be sure to book hotel rooms well in advance.
