After a stay in the ochre-coloured city of Marrakech, just 40 miles away lie the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas mountains, towering above the desert floor.

Original Travel has a selection of the finest riads within Marrakech’s medina walls and just outside, and wandering around the souqs of the famous red city alone is an utterly memorable experience.

The mountains are the perfect antidote to the bustle of Marrakech, and the former warlord’s fortress of Kasbah du Toubkal, set at the confluence of two valleys, is an ideal base camp for trekking.

The Kasbah boasts an unrivalled position facing Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, and has extremely comfortable rooms, a traditional hammam steam room and a huge roof terrace overlooking the village of Imlil.

Trek with an experienced guide past walnut groves and Berber goatherds, taking in the incredible views down the valleys with their tiny villages. Day trips are available, but more adventurous souls can try an overnight trip, accompanied by a donkey laden with all the necessary food and bedding for an overnight stay in a remote village.

Also possible is the beautiful ascent of Jebel Toubkal itself, which also involves an overnight stay.
