Idyllic Indian Ocean beaches > An evening cruise on a traditional dhow > Wandering the historic old town of Lamu.

Kenya is renowned as a safari destination, but also has miles of idyllic coastline - none more so than the coral-fringed, car-free islands of the Lamu archipelago. Lying just south of the equator, this is a world of white sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean - the perfect place for a relaxing break.

Scattered across the islands are a number of beachfront retreats offering barefoot luxury and seclusion. On Lamu, the main island, choose from Shela Beach House, Peponi or Kizingo. Alternatively, on the neighbouring island of Manda is the Manda Bay lodge, and last but not least is Kiwayu, situated on the island of the same name – the northernmost of the archipelago.

All of these offer wonderful beaches, delicious fresh seafood and a variety of watersports, from windsurfing, diving, waterskiing and deep-sea fishing (in season) to swimming with dolphins, snorkelling on the reefs and exploring the mangrove creeks by kayak at high tide. Or you can simply stroll along deserted beaches, unwind with a good book and a cool drink under a palm tree, or take a sundowner cruise on a traditional wooden sailing dhow.

Lamu also has a rich history to explore, having once been a major trading post of the Omani empire which took in much of the so called ‘Swahili coast’ of east Africa. The narrow, donkey and cat-inhabited streets of Lamu Old Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site – are well worth exploring on foot or by bicycle in the cooler hours of morning or evening.
