The Rhône valley is a wonderful but often overlooked part of France that most travellers neglect as they rush to Paris, the Alps or the Mediterranean. This region is synonymous with good living – it is the gastronomic heartland of France – and boasts beautiful rolling countryside and the much under-rated city of Lyon.

Set amidst the rolling hills and vineyards of the Beaujolais region, the Château de Bagnols is arguably France’s finest château-hotel. Dating from the 13th century, the château’s massive honey-coloured walls, ringed by a dry moat, conceal luxurious rooms and suites decorated with period furnishings.

The superb Salle des Gardes restaurant serves first-class French cuisine in a magnificent beamed dining hall, dominated by a massive Gothic fireplace. In the summer months, you can also dine outside on the terrace, beneath the lime trees, and of course there is an extremely well-stocked cellar from which to select a good bottle or two. The château’s gardens contain an orchard of cherry trees and a circular swimming pool.

From this luxurious base, explore charming medieval villages such as Pérouges, Oingt or Vienne with its Roman remains, visit the world-renowned vineyards of the Burgundy region, or sample the attractions of nearby Lyon. France’s second city has fantastic food markets and restaurants ranging from Michelin-starred establishments to cosy ‘bouchons’, while Vieux Lyon – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is home to well preserved Renaissance districts intersected by the ‘traboules’ or covered alleyways.
