HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Your first sight of Victoria Falls > Sunrise or sunset over the Zambezi on a canoe safari > A walking safari in the Lower Zambezi or South Luangwa national parks.
The combination of Victoria Falls and superb game viewing makes Zambia one of the most appealing destinations in southern Africa. The falls, known by the much more apt name of Mosi-oa-Tunya (‘the smoke that thunders’) to the local Kololo tribe who first showed them to David Livingstone, are one of the natural wonders of the world – a mile-wide curtain of water that throws up clouds of fine spray which can be seen for miles around.
Above and below the falls, the Zambezi is the focus for a wide variety of activities. Upstream, the wide and placid river is ideal for canoeing safaris, picnic lunches on the islands, and sundowner cruises. Downstream, the river takes on a completely different character – a narrow, raging torrent squeezed by the vertical walls of Batoka gorge. This makes for some of the best white-water rafting in the world. Bungee-jumping and the original ‘gorge-swing’ are amongst the other activities available here.
Two of the best lodges in the vicinity of Victoria Falls are Tongabezi and the River Club, both of which offer luxurious riverside accommodation and easy access to all the activities mentioned above.
Following the river eastwards, the Lower Zambezi National Park has some of the richest wildlife in Zambia, including large herds of elephant and a sizeable population of the rare African wild dog.
To the north-east, the Luangwa Valley, which marks the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the continent’s great unspoilt wildernesses. The ox-bow lagoons, plains and woodlands of the South Luangwa National Park host huge concentrations of game, including over 400 species of bird.
Both the South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi offer exceptional walking safaris. Led by highly experienced guides and accompanied by armed scouts, a walking safari is the best way to discover the diversity and secrets of the African bush. Walks are supplemented with boat trips and game drives (including night drives to see nocturnal wildlife) and the Zambezi and its tributaries are also renowned for their excellent tiger fish angling.
Nights can be spent either in the comfort of the lodge or fly-camping out in the bush. In the Lower Zambezi, stay at Chongwe River Camp, Chiawa Camp or Sausage Tree Camp. In the South Luangwa, choose from Tena Tena, Nkwali or Nsefu. For families or groups who want complete privacy, Chongwe River House and Luangwa House are two outstanding private lodges available on an exclusive basis.
