HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Low-level flights over the Skeleton Coast > Scenery of the remote desert > Encounter with the nomadic Himba people
A fly-in safari along the Skeleton Coast will take you to some of the most undeveloped and remote wilderness areas of Namibia. The Skeleton Coast, so named because of the dangerous ocean currents that make it treacherous to shipping, includes the whole Namibian coastline and continues across the border some 200 km into Angola. It is part of the Namib Desert, and various sections have conservation status, notably the Skeleton Coast Park in the north.
A major feature of this trip is the use of a light aircraft as a ‘safari vehicle’. Flights at "sea" level provide outstanding bird's-eye views of shipwreck remains along the coast, diverse geological formations and the refuges of desert-dwelling animals such as the endangered black rhino and desert-adapted elephant. On the ground, Land Rovers are used to explore the environment and discover interesting flora and fauna, such as the desert-adapted elephant, endangered black rhino and the strange 'living fossil' Welwitschia plant. It should be emphasised, however, that the prime purpose of these safaris is not to view game, but to experience the freedom, beauty and strange solitude of the area. Seeing game should therefore be considered a bonus. Ancient Bushman rock art and a visit to a settlement of the nomadic Himba people, who still live and dress according to ancient customs and traditions, are also part of the itinerary.
Accommodation is in tented camps - a different one for each of the three nights of the safari – spaced at intervals along the coast. The camps are basic but comfortable, and each is situated in a spot carefully chosen for its unique beauty.
Follow a Skeleton Coast safari with a stay at Serra Cafema Camp, located in the extreme north-west of Namibia and probably the most remote camp in Southern Africa. This small private camp is built on the banks of the Kunene River that forms the border with Angola. The river is the only permanent source of water in the whole of the region and creates a lush oasis along its banks surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes. The flight in takes guests over incredible scenery, and the journey from the airstrip to camp is an adventure in itself, culminating in a dramatic and breathtaking descent to the camp.
Although remote, the camp provides a luxurious and relaxing environment – a welcome sequel to the relatively (and necessarily) spartan accommodation on the Skeleton Coast. The camp's six canvas and thatched chalets have en-suite bathroom facilities, and there is a bar, dining area and swimming pool. Activities include enjoying the breathtaking landscapes, game drives, traversing the sand dunes in Land Rovers, walking in the remote mountains, and boating on the Kunene River where you can watch for crocodiles.
