HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
The great migration in the Serengeti > A boat safari in the Selous > Casting for tiger fish on the Rufiji River

Tanzania is arguably the finest safari destination in Africa, and home to two of the continent’s most renowned game reserves: the legendary Serengeti in the north, and the sprawling Selous in the south.

In the Masai language Serengeti means ‘endless plains’, and from the air it can appear like an ocean of grass, stretching to the Kenyan border, where it merges with the Masai Mara. This is classic savannah scenery, and the setting for the great migration – one of the natural wonders of the world. Millions of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game move in a continuous cycle around the Serengeti-Masai ecosystem, following the rains in search of fresh grazing.

Stay at Nduara Loliondo, one of the most original safari camps in Africa. This mobile camp, where accommodation consists of yurt-style tents, moves seasonally within the Loliondo area on the eastern edge of the Serengeti to capture the best game viewing opportunities. Walking safaris and night drives are both possible here, as are day trips to the remarkable Ngorongoro crater.

The Serengeti may be big, but is still dwarfed by the Selous - Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary – which is comfortably larger than Switzerland. In contrast to the open plains of the Serengeti, the Selous is a wilderness of tangled jungle and meandering ‘sand rivers’ that only flow in the wet season.

Stay at Sand Rivers or Beho Beho, two luxurious lodges situated in the northern Selous, overlooking the floodplain of the Rufiji River. For families or groups of friends, Kiba Point, a small lodge booked on an exclusive basis, is also a good option.

Between them, the Serengeti and Selous offer an outstanding wildlife experience, with the Selous offering the extra dimension of boat trips on the river and nearby Lake Tagalala. A safari to either of these reserves can be easily combined with other destinations in Tanzania, including the beautiful beaches of the coast.
