HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Luxurious lodges > Quality game-viewing > Spa treatments and gourmet cuisine in the middle of the African bush.
A safari in South Africa is not beyond the realms of a Big Short Break, thanks to the proximity of the renowned Kruger National Park to Johannesburg. An overnight flight to Johannesburg, followed by a short onward hop, and before you know it you’re in the heart of the African bush.
The Kruger is South Africa’s oldest and largest nature reserve, covering an area of almost two million hectares. Together with neighbouring parks in Mozambique and Zimbabwe it forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, with a combined area the size of Portugal. This huge expanse contains a diversity of landscapes and a fascinating diversity of wildlife. Along with adjoining private reserves such as the Sabi Sands area, the Kruger Park offers some of the best game viewing in Africa. All of the ‘Big Five’ - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – are present, as well as dozens of species of plains game and several hundred different bird species.
Original Travel has selected several of the finest lodges in the Kruger area that offer the usual safari activities coupled with outstanding accommodation, gourmet cuisine and five-star facilities such as spas:
Royal Malewane is located in the 12,000-hectare Thornybush Game Reserve, part of the Sabi Sands concession on the western fringe of the Kruger Park. Decorated in colonial-era style, each of the luxurious rooms comes with its own private deck and pool, and is linked by elevated walkways to the main part of the camp, which includes a steamroom and spa.
Alternatively, Singita Lebombo, located in the remote south-eastern corner of the Kruger Park, is Africa’s most avant-garde safari lodge. Built in a highly contemporary style, with steel and glass replacing the more traditional wood and thatch of most safari lodges, Singita Lebombo is straight out of the pages of a design magazine. From its elevated position, it enjoys spectacular views over the surrounding bush, which is home to the highest densities of game in the whole of the Kruger. A spa, gym, swimming pool and library are among the facilities of this unique lodge.
Last but not least, Garonga is a more traditional tented safari camp in the private Makalali Conservancy situated to the west of the Kruger Park. Emphasis here is just as much on relaxation and pampering as it is on safari activities. In between game drives you can relax by the pool, enjoy an aromatherapy or reflexology treatment, or snooze in a hammock on your private deck with a glass of vintage South African wine. Activities include sleep-outs in a luxury tree-house a short distance from the camp. For those looking for total privacy, nearby Little Garonga is an exclusive-use camp with its own guide, safari vehicle, chef and pool.
