HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Quality game-viewing > Luxurious lodges > Spa treatments and fine dining in the middle of the African bush

A safari in South Africa is not beyond the realms of a Big Short Break, thanks to the proximity of the renowned Kruger National Park to Johannesburg. The Kruger is South Africa’s largest and oldest nature reserve, covering an area of almost two million hectares. Together with neighbouring parks in Mozambique and Zimbabwe it forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, with a combined area the size of Portugal.

The Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals, including all of the ‘Big Five’ - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Along with adjoining private reserves such as the Sabi Sands area, the park offers some of the best game viewing in Africa. Original Travel has selected three of the finest lodges in and around the Kruger Park, all of which offer an excellent wildlife experience, and much more besides:

Royal Malewane, in the 12,000-hectare Thornybush Game Reserve on the western fringe of the Kruger Park, offers five-star luxury in the middle of the African bush. The lodge accommodates a maximum of just sixteen guests, with each air-conditioned suite having its own private deck and plunge pool. Facilities include a steamroom and a spa offering massages, aromatherapy and other treatments. In the evenings, enjoy world-class cuisine and a selection of South Africa's finest wines.

Alternatively, Singita Lebombo, voted the ‘World’s Best Hotel’ by Condé Nast Traveller magazine in 2004, is Africa’s most avant-garde safari lodge. Located in the remote south-eastern corner of the Kruger Park, the lodge is surrounded by a 30,000-acre private concession that is home to the highest densities of game in the whole of Kruger. Singita Lebombo is built in a highly contemporary style, and the overall effect is more chic boutique hotel than game lodge. Facilities include a spa, swimming pool and a gourmet restaurant with an excellent wine cellar.

Last but not least, Garonga is a more traditional tented safari camp in the private Makalali Conservancy situated to the west of the Kruger Park. Garonga offers excellent game drives and wilderness walks, but emphasis is just as much on relaxation and pampering as it is on game-viewing. There is a swimming pool and a range of aromatherapy and reflexology treatments on offer, or you can just relax in your hammock. Guests can also choose to sleep out in a tree-house located a short distance from the camp.
