Wolwedans is situated in the heart of NamibRand Nature Reserve, on the eastern edge of the Namib Desert. The reserve contains a diversity of desert landscapes, with virtually all facets of the Namiba represented here. The overall effect is a tapestry of colours and shapes that make it a visual utopia for photographers and those in search of natural beauty. Game species found in the reserve include oryx, zebra, ostrich, giraffe, several species of antelope, and a wide variety of smaller desert creatures. Over a hundred species of birds have also been recorded. Conservation comes first on NamibRand, so the number of guests to this wilderness paradise is strictly limited.

Nestled amidst red sand dunes at the heart of the reserve is Wolwedans - the perfect place to relax and unwind or explore the vast stretches of unspoilt wilderness. There are several options of accommodation, offering different levels of comfort. The Dune Lodge consists of comfortable chalets strung out along a crest of dunes, with stunning views of the nearby mountains. Facilities at the lodge include a swimming pool, a library-lounge, and an excellent wine cellar. The Dune Camp, situated a few kilometres from the Lodge, offers a more rustic, down-to-earth experience, with large, comfortable tents built on wooden platforms. For those seeking absolute privacy, there is a luxurious Mountain View Suite close to the Dune Lodge, and a Private Camp set on its own down in the plains. In all cases, the food and service are of the same high standard, and there are panoramic views of some of the most beautiful scenery in Africa.

Activities at Wolwedans include guided game drives or walks led by knowledgeable guides who reveal the fascinating flora and fauna of the desert. Picnics in the reserve, sundowner drinks on the dunes and hot-air balloon flights are also offered. Wolwedans is a unique destination – ideal for nature-lovers in search of a special desert experience off the beaten track.

Combine a stay at Wolwedans with a trip to nearby Sossusvlei to experience more of the desert's awesome grandeur and breathtaking beauty. One of the most spectacular sights in Namibia, Sossusvlei is a clay pan, or dry lake, enclosed by giant sand dunes – thought to be the tallest in the world. Very occasionally, when there has been sufficient rainfall to cause the Tsauchab River to flow, the pan fills with water and becomes a turquoise lake that lasts just a few weeks and makes the scenery even more surreal. The dunes have been sculpted by the wind over millions of years, and some of them have become petrified over time. You can climb to the top of the tallest ones for stunning views of the surrounding ‘sand sea’. The changing colours make for wonderful photographic opportunities.
