There is something of a revolution going on in the Spanish Islands. Gone is the emphasis on package deals and charter flights; instead, a more discerning traveller is being lured by a sudden explosion of boutique hotels and much improved airline schedules.

Mallorca has signalled its intent to lure the top-end traveller, with the capital city of Palma revamped as one of the chicest cities in Europe for a weekend break and some fine hotels, both in Palma (see separate Palma trip under Original Cities) and outside the capital. The white sand beaches, beautiful mountains and a healthy quota of excellent restaurants all add to the attraction.

Original Travel has selected three of the finest hotels on the island: the Son Net, the Son Julia, and the Son Brull.

Son Net is a luxurious five-star boutique hotel set in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains. The Son Net makes the perfect place for a few days of pampering, and its superb Orangerie restaurant draws those in the know from far and wide.

A brand new addition to the Mallorcan hotel scene, and sister to the Son Net, is the stylish Son Julia. Just fifteen minutes from the airport, and within easy reach of Palma and the beaches of the south-east, this converted 15th century mansion is ideal for a relaxing short break.

The Canary Islands, lying on the same latitude as Florida and a long-time favourite winter sun destination, are also catering to a new clientele. Leading the way on Tenerife is the boutique hotel San Roque, a beautifully restored 17th century manor house in the small seaside town of Garachico on the northwest coast. Stylish and contemporary, the San Roque makes a luxurious hideaway or an ideal base from which to explore this little known part of the island.

Alternatively, the impressive new Abama resort has a cliff-top setting with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and comprehensive range of facilities that makes it a good choice for families. Tenerife also hosts the biggest carnival in Europe every February, and its beaches and surfing are second to none.

On Gran Canaria, the Grand Hotel Residencia is the pick of the hotels, situated next to the huge rolling dunes of Maspalomas Beach. Gran Canaria is often referred to as a continent in one island, due to the diversity of landscapes it contains, including pine forests and volcanic mountain ranges that are well worth exploring if you tire of the beach.
