The island where Odysseus fell under the seven-year spell of the dazzling sea-nymph Calypso has many attractions for the latter day visitor, and yet revels in relative anonymity as a tiny satellite island off the north-western corner of Malta.

Comprising just sixty-seven square kilometres, Gozo at first seems a staunchly traditional island, steeped in religious and clan ties. Every weekend in the summer months sees one or other village celebrating a patron saint’s festival with street parties and huge clan flags flying from every roof top in traditions unchanged since the middle ages.

But there is more to the island than tradition and nostalgia. The coastline features some of the finest snorkelling and diving opportunities in the Mediterranean, and the opening of the new Kempinski Hotel in San Lawrenz means the tiny island now has the biggest spa in Western Europe as a powerful lure. The Kempinski San Lawrenz has all the facilities of a top resort, including a scuba-diving centre.

Another attraction of Gozo is the surprisingly vibrant nightlife that draws clued-up clubbers to two or three nightspots that often feature performances by DJs more usually seen in the likes of Ibiza. These clubs - one of which features an outdoor dancefloor in the keep of an old coastal fort - are all away from the villages, so those after a quieter holiday are not disturbed.

Add to all this a superb climate and some excellent restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood, and you have an extremely alluring option that can only make one empathise with Odysseus.
