HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Superb service > All but guaranteed good weather
Dubai is a great winter break destination – sunshine is all but guaranteed, there is a choice of outstanding hotels and restaurants, pristine beaches, warm sea, famously good shopping, and all within reasonable flying time of the UK. Cultural attractions may be lacking, but that is not what Dubai is about - what it does, it does very well.
The second largest of the seven emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has undergone an extraordinary transformation from a sleepy fishing and pearl-diving centre on the shores of the Gulf to the ultra-modern city-state of today in a matter of just a few decades. Oil wealth has been invested in creating a truly 21st-century city, a project that is still very much ongoing, as ever more spectacular architectural creations are added to the already impressive skyline.
Modern Dubai is a cosmopolitan society, with a wide range of attractions, from water sports, golf and tennis to international sporting events such as horse racing’s World Cup. Dubai’s legendary tax-free shopping ranges from traditional Arabic souqs to opulent, marble-clad malls, where the choice (and prices) of the products are unrivalled. The duty free shopping at Dubai International Airport is just a taste of what lies beyond.
The past hasn’t been completely erased by the present, however. Dubai’s old heart can still be found in the Bastakia area around the Creek, from where wooden dhows still trade across the Gulf and further afield. And not every modern building is a hotel – the Jumeirah Mosque is a striking example of modern Islamic architecture and well worth a visit.
Original Travel has rates with many of Dubai’s best hotels, including the Jumeirah Beach Club, the Ritz-Carlton and the Royal Mirage, all of which are set right on the beach, overlooking the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf. Each offers first class accommodation and facilities.
For those wishing to experience another facet of Dubai, with the arrival of Per Aquum's Desert Palm, there are now three excellent hotels in the desert: the immaculate Al Maha resort, set in a 225-square-kilometre conservation reserve, offers the tranquillity of the desert and a total contrast from the city. Desert Palm is easy to reach from the airport, and something of a contemporary take on arabic design, with a polo field and wonderful grounds. Alternatively, stay at Bab Al Shams, an atmospheric desert resort and spa, offering a taste of traditional Arabia.
