HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Para-glide over Cape Town > Sea kayak with whales > The views from Table Mountain, particularly after climbing it
With the ocean lapping on white beaches, and Table Mountain as a towering backdrop, Cape Town enjoys the most spectacular natural setting of any city in the world, with the possible exception of Rio de Janeiro.
Cape Town earned its name from seafarers desperate for a first sighting of Table Mountain, meaning they had reached the Cape of Good Hope. This is a city that offers something for everyone, from adventurers to wine enthusiasts.
A strong draw for climbers and skydivers alike, Table Mountain is a playground for the outdoors type. Experience the thrill of a tandem paraglide over Cape Town. This is just one of a variety of activities available, including sea-kayaking, mountain biking, deep-sea fishing or even clay pigeon shooting from the bows of a catamaran.
On a more sedate note, South Africa produces some of the finest New World wines. Indulge the tastebuds during a day of tastings on the renowned Stellenbosch Wine Route.
Stay at the exclusive Ellerman House hotel, situated within walking distance of Clifton Beach and just ten minutes from the centre of Cape Town. Another stylish boutique hotel is Kensington Place, which sits on the slopes of Table Mountain overlooking the city. Alternatively, there is the Mount Nelson Hotel, a famous old Cape Town landmark set in acres of gardens close to the city centre. Any one of these makes an ideal base for exploration of the Cape’s many attractions.
Combine a visit to Cape Town with a trip outside the city. Just an hour along the coast is the small resort town of Hermanus, renowned for sightings of Southern Right whales. Take a day-trip from Cape Town or stay overnight at the elegant Birkenhead House hotel, located on the clifftops with spectacular ocean views and a great restaurant. Besides whale-watching, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy from Hermanus.
Another very worthwhile excursion from Cape Town is a stay at La Residence, just 45 minutes away in the Franschhoek Valley. Situated on its own private wine and olive estate, La Residence is designed in the style of a Tuscan villa, and offers complete privacy and a very high level of service, with personal chefs, butlers and chauffeurs for guests. Booked on an exclusive basis, La Residence offers good value, but is more expensive on an individual room basis.
Back in Cape Town itself, Original Travel can recommend all the best restaurants that feature South Africa's exceptional and inventive cuisine, and also the city's liveliest bars and clubs for those intent on making the most of any stay.
