HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Spotting a killer whale for the first time > Watching the orcas feeding at close hand > Snorkel with Orcas > Stunning Lofoten scenery > Experience the spectacular display of colourful Northern Lights on a cold winter’s evening.
Every year since 1986, between 500 and 700 orcas (killer whales) have congregated in the narrow fjords of northern Norway to hunt the enormous shoals of herring that congregate in the area each winter.
The orcas’ special hunting technique involves driving shoals of herring towards the surface, thrashing the water with their powerful tails, and picking the stunned fish off one by one. At the same time, white-tailed sea eagles gather over the killer whales, to catch any herrings that may be left floating on the surface. This dramatic scene, framed by the Lofoten Islands’ spectacular and rugged mountains, covered with fresh powder snow, is truly breathtaking.
The Orca safari will take place on board either a large boat (former trawler) or on an inflatable dinghy where Orcas can be observed in such close proximity and in such numbers. Expert guides, who will also be on board, have been studying the orcas for years and are well practiced in finding the whales. Often orcas’ curiosity brings them right to the side of the boat for close encounters. Under the right conditions the most adventurous can even join the killer whales in the water. Participants can rent necessary equipment, such as a dry suit and ABC-equipment (face mask with snorkel, and flippers).
This Big Short Break is best experienced from December to February, in order to make the most of the freezing sea temperatures and rising light levels which enable adventurous day-trips on board the Orca safari.
Tysfjord Tourist Centre is the base camp for killer whale safaris in Norway, and offers modern hotel rooms with all conveniences. The complex is in a picturesque setting, looking onto the idyllic Storjordpolden and facing Norway's national mountain, the Stetind. Some of the world's most beautiful rock carvings are close by.
The Tysfjord Tourist Centre is a hotel big enough to meet most requirements, but small enough to ensure personal contact and good service.
