Known as the ‘whale watching capital of Iceland’, Húsavík is a prime location for spotting whales and other large marine life. This little fishing town is nestled on Iceland’s north coast, on the eastern shore of Skjálfandi Bay. The area also offers a range of other outdoor activities, like birdwatching, riding and hiking, with its most popular rambling route, the Húsavíkurfjall trail, leading to the summit of a nearby mountain, boasting breath-taking views over the surrounding landscape. Húsavík is home to several cultural attractions; the Húsavík Whale Museum and the GeoSea Geothermal Sea Baths are a couple of our favourites.
The town plays host to the annual Vilking festival, aptly named Fiskidagurinn Mikli or the ‘Big Fishing Day’, which celebrates Iceland’s fishing heritage and includes a variety of exciting events and traditional activities. If a blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure and cultural attractions is what you’re after, look no further than Húsavík.
