The twisty-turvy coastline of southern Greece has long been pigeon-holed as a summer-only destination; but with snowy mountains, crowd-free sites and balmy temperatures, the Peloponnese peninsula is a winter must.

Kick off your six-day Grecian getaway in the mountain village of Magouliana, where luxurious treatments in your spa hotel offer rejuvenating respite after hiking (and perhaps even skiing) in the Arcadia mountains. Part two of this winter escape takes you through the heart of fragrant Mediterranean countryside to Mystras, a picturesque hillside village characterised by its rich Byzantine history, culture and architecture. After discovering the marvellous relics of the previous millennia with a private guide,
head to nearby Sparta to trace the footsteps of the ancient kings, queens and warriors of Homer’s Iliad. It’s here that you’ll also learn the secrets of traditional olive oil production before sampling the region’s finest ‘liquid gold’ for yourself. Let the adventure begin…

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAY 1

Touchdown in Greece

Your winter escape to the idyllic Peloponnese peninsula starts today. Head to the airport, whizz through security and enjoy a premium pitstop in the private lounge as you await departure. A four-hour flight lands you in Athens, where you’ll collect your rental car and head straight out of the city to the Peloponnese. Your first destination is the charming mountain village of Magouliana, a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. On arrival, check in for two nights in an elegant spa hotel surrounded by an enchanting fir forest and spend the rest of today relaxing and settling into your new home.

DAY 2

Explore a local ski resort

Wake up in your new surroundings and start the day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel. As it’s winter and you’re in the heart of the mountains, there’s a good chance snow will have fallen. Make the most of the seasonal environment by heading to a small ski resort, just a 30-minute drive away. The journey is seriously scenic, passing through a dense fir tree-laden forest before opening out into a winter wonderland. Take advantage of this natural beauty with a gentle walk through the snowy hills. Back at the hotel, there is the option for a 90-minute session in the spa to truly recharge the batteries and let go of any lingering tension.

DAY 3

Travel to a classic hillside village

After a relaxing start to your trip, it’s time to hit the road again for some more Greek-filled fun. Journey two hours to Mystras and check in to your new home: a luxurious spa-hotel that offers a variety of soothing treatments centred around in-depth rejuvenation. The rest of today is yours to spend at leisure. We recommend getting your bearings and checking out your new base with a stroll through beautiful Mystras. The architecture of this stunning hillside town can be attributed to its Byzantine past, while the view across a succession of rolling hills is all down to Mother Nature.

DAYS 4 & 5

Bask in the charms of Mystras

The next two days are all about delving into the rich historic past of this portion of the Peloponnese. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Mystras is a town still full of splendour, effortlessly evoking its prosperous past as the centre of Byzantine power in southern Greece. Head out with a knowledgeable local to discover the most iconic sites and monuments of the region. Start in the lower city with visits to the Metropolis, the churches of Hagios Demetrios, Saints Theodore, Hodighitria, Evangelistria and the Peribleptos monastery. Then continue on to the upper part of the city to explore the citadel and the Pantanassa monastery. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit nearby Sparta, the ancient Greek city-state immortalised in Homer’s Iliad.

After soaking in the sites of the city, head to the Sparta Olive Oil Museum to learn about the secrets of the traditional production of olive oil and taste for yourself how this age-old process has stood the test of time. During your time in Mystras, our team could also arrange for you to experience a traditional Byzantine hammam – a steamy spa treatment that combines cleansing rituals with some serious R&R.

DAY 6

Goodbye Greece

With a head full of memories and a suitcase full of souvenirs, it’s time to bid Greece a warm farewell and embark on the journey home. Drive three hours back to Athens, drop off your hire car and enjoy some peace and quiet in the airport lounge as you get ready for your four-hour flight back to the UK. And if you’re not quite ready to head back north? We can extend your holiday with a few days in the intoxicating capital city of Athens.

A la carte

A 90-MINUTE SPA TREATMENT

Release any lingering tension right off the bat with a soothing 90-minute spa treatment on your first full day in Greece. The facilities at your hotel are excellent, offering a treatment program based around the regenerative power of the surrounding nature.

BYZANTINE HAMMAM FOR TWO

The steamy all-marble hammam is one of the most emblematic spaces in a Greek spa. The Byzantine take on the iconic hammam is elevated by its focus on ancient cleansing rituals. Settle in for a treatment program of exfoliation, massages and various water sprinkles, all applied with expert precision.

WITH A FEW MORE DAYS… ATHENS

If you have a few extra days to play with, why not extend your holiday with a few days in the vibrant capital of Athens? Delve into the ancient foundations of Western civilisation with visits to the legendary archaeological area. Discover the Parthenon, the temple that dominates the Acropolis; the Erechtheion, an ancient Greek Ionic temple; and the ancient theatres of Dionysus and Herodes Atticus, both of which are nestled into the Acropolis hillside. When you’re ready to rejoin modern civilisation, head to the central Syntagma Square to admire the marvels of the 19th and 20th centuries: Parliament, the Royal Palace and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also recommend strolling through the gallery-filled district of Metaxourgeio, as well as the eclectic Exarcheia district.
