What we came up with

Road tripping with the kids might seem like a slightly daunting task, but travelling down the West Coast of California is packed to the rafters with activities, and scenery to make little jaws drop.

Itinerary Highlights

  • San Francisco - 3 days
Unpack the kids and bags into the St Regis San Francisco, to begin the road trip adventure. Little ones will love the Aquarium of the Bay, and Bay Area Discovery Museum, whilst for older kids a cell audio tour at the infamous Alcatraz, or tandem bicycle ride across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge are sure to be highlights.
  • Yosemite National Park - 3 days
Time for some quality family time in the great outdoors, and it doesn't get much greater than the Yosemite National Park. Explore the alpine meadows, tumbling waterfalls and granite monoliths, and be dwarfed by groves of ancient sequoia trees (yes, parents too) on foot, retreating to the Tenaya Lodge for well earned rest. Tenaya also boasts a kids camp, ice rink, archery and rock climbing as well as golf, horseback riding and rafting, so there's plenty to amuse the whole family.
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea - 2 days
Back to the coast and just a short drive from Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Carmel Valley Ranch has chic minimalist interiors with private balconies on connecting suites. The Carmel Valley Ranch kids and teens club will keep the kids busy with hiking, tennis and arts and crafts on offer, whilst parents indulge in the treetop Aiyana Spa, or enjoy wine tastings.
  • Morro Bay - 1 day
Family run and family oriented means Anderson Inn is the perfect place to stay for proper seafront fun in Morro Bay. Spend days kayaking, surfing, whale watching and canoeing, with the occassional glimpse of a seal, popping up by your canoe.
  • Santa Barbara - 2 days
Hispanic Santa Barbara is home to the luxurious Four Seasons Santa Barbara, set within 22 acres of garden. The Coral Casino Beach Club offers surfing, kayaking and swimming, whilst parents lounge poolside, or indulge in a spa treatment or two.
  • Los Angeles - 3 days
Cruise some of the final miles of Highway 1 into Los Angeles to conclude your family adventure. The whole family are sure to love a VIP tour of Universal Studios, to see some of the oldest film sets in Hollywood, and of course there's the obligatory visit to Hollywood to name-spot the avenue of stars, and marvel at Grauman's Chinese theatre. Shutters on the Beach is the perfect family-friendly LA base, located on the relaxed sands of Santa Monica, with yoga, volleyball and surfing available on your doorstep.

A rough idea of price
