For those that seek boutique retreats, Lakaz Chamarel offers a refreshing alternative to the larger resorts which populate the beaches of Mauritius. With just 20 suites set within 12 hectares of tropical gardens, Lakaz Chamarel combines the charm of a Mauritian guesthouse, with the luxury of a 5* hotel.
This luxurious eco-lodge is located near to the village of Chamarel in south west Mauritius, and is surrounded by the Black River Gorges national park. It's only 15 minutes from some beautiful beaches too, and so offers the perfect balance of nature and coastal relaxation.
Each of the guestrooms and suites at Lakaz Chamarel are individually designed, with décor and furnishings which represent the diversity of cultures on Mauritius, from the imported Indian furniture in 'Lakaz Dibois', to the Bamboo décor in 'Kaz Zen'. All guestrooms and suites feature artwork by local Mauritian artists, ensuite bathrooms with open air showers, and private terraces which take full advantage of the views over the ocean from the hilltop. Some suites also include private swimming pools.
There is one restaurant at Lakaz Chamarel, where Chef Nicholas creates a range of Mauritian specialities and fresh seafood, along with some international dishes, light salads, pastas and sandwiches. A full American breakfast is served each morning, with a continental breakfast available for really late risers, when the buffet has closed. There's also a separate bar area, where guests are encouraged to serve themselves, and enjoy a sundowner on the verandah. Alternatively, Ravissen is hailed as one of the best cocktail makers on the island, and would happy to create the perfect drink to enjoy as the sun sets.
For guests not staying in a Pool Suite, there are two communal pools at Lakaz Chamarel, surrounded by loungers and shaded beds. To continue the theme of relaxation, there's a 'Sauna and Massage Cabin', and complimentary yoga classes offered at the 'silent space'. Private yoga sessions can also be arranged. And the beaches - oh the beaches! Just 15 minutes away are the beaches of Morne and Baie du Cap, which are some of the most beautiful on the island. Guests can take the hotel bicycles to cycle downhill, but shuttles are also provided by the hotel - particularly for those who don't fancy the uphill cycle back.
The surrounding mountains are great for trekking, and guided walks can be arranged. Guests are also encouraged to explore local villages, including Chamarel, where there are a few local spots for dinner too. On the water, guests can enjoy kite-surfing, water ski-ing and fishing trips.
